{"id":9814,"date":"2019-07-11T09:33:31","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=9814"},"modified":"2019-07-12T07:16:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T13:16:06","slug":"spm-07-11-2019-weak-thunderstorms-over-the-high-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=9814","title":{"rendered":"SPM 07-11-2019: Weak Thunderstorms over the High Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue date: Thursday, July 11, 2019<br>\nIssue Time: 9:45 AM MDT<\/p>\n<h3>Summary:<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> weak thunderstorms formed over the San Juan Mountains and Central Mountains yesterday afternoon as a vorticity maximum formed over the area.&nbsp; Slow upper level winds and large scale subsidence underneath the high pressure ridge prevented the storms from moving over the eastern plains.&nbsp; Radar derived rainfall of up to 0.25 inches over the regions above.&nbsp; CWOP stations near Fairplay in Park County and Trinidad in Las Animas County measured 0.13 and 0.05 inches respectively.&nbsp; Many surface stations underneath areas of radar measured rainfall didn&rsquo;t report rain, meaning that dry air underneath the storm base likely evaporated the precipitation prior to it reaching the surface.&nbsp; Passage of the cold front over the eastern plains, kept high temperatures in the upper 80&deg;Fs yesterday, but clear skies and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;advection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The process of transport of an atmospheric property, typically temperature or moisture in our FTB discussions, by the wind. &amp;quot;Strong&rdquo; or &amp;quot;weak&rdquo; advection refers to the rate of change of the advected property&amp;#039;s value at a given point.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>advection<\/span> of hot, dry air from the west southwest allowed highs to reach 98&deg;F over the Grand Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The AHPS gage on the Arkansas River near La Junta retreated below Action stage rapidly by noon yesterday morning.&nbsp; The gage on the Rio Grande River near Alamosa remains at Action stage.&nbsp; There were no reports of flooding yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>For a look at precipitation in your area, please check out our State Precipitation Map below.<br><\/p><h4 class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id6a1f23d202950\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Click Here For Map Overview\">Click Here For Map Overview<\/h4><div id=\"target-id6a1f23d202950\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\nThe map below shows radar-estimated, rainfall gage-adjusted Quantitative Precipitation Estimates (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;QPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Q&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;uantitative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;P&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;recipitation &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;stimate; an estimate of the amount of precipitation that has fallen at a particular location or across a region based on several different data sources, such as radar or satellite; QPE is often calculated using remotely-sensed data sources&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>QPE<\/span>) across Colorado. The map is updated daily during the operational season (May 1 &ndash; Sep 30) by 11AM. The following six layers are currently available: 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour total precipitation, as well as maximum 1-hour, 2-hour and 6-hour precipitation over the past 24 hour period (to estimate where <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> may have occurred). The 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour total precipitation contain bias corrections that are not disaggregated into the hourly estimates, so there will likely be some differences. The accumulation ending time is 7AM of the date shown in the bottom right corner. Also shown optionally are vulnerable fire burn areas (post 2012), which are updated throughout the season to include new, vulnerable burn areas.
