{"id":9811,"date":"2019-07-11T09:27:54","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=9811"},"modified":"2019-07-11T09:42:35","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:42:35","slug":"ftb-07-11-2019-hot-temperatures-with-a-chance-of-thunderstorms-over-southern-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=9811","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-11-2019: Hot Temperatures with a Chance of Thunderstorms over Southern Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Thursday, July, 11th, 2019<br>\nIssue Time: 9:40AM MDT<\/p>\n<p><em>&ndash;Flooding is <strong>NOT<\/strong> expected today<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The upper level high pressure ridge remains centered over Colorado today and now covers most of the United States as the summer heatwave continues.&nbsp; The clockwise rotation around the zone of high pressure (marked &ldquo;H&rdquo; below) will bring in moisture from the southwest, but keep the northern areas of the state mostly dry. &nbsp;<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> was measured at 1.12 and 0.64 inches over Tuscon and Flagstaff Arizona this morning and will move in from the south southwest throughout the day.&nbsp; A <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> embedded within the high pressure, marked by an X in the water vapor imagery below, is forecast to move over central Colorado by 2PM today.&nbsp; This <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> is expected to create a vorticity maximum over the area that will move to the southeast throughout the afternoon and into the night.&nbsp; Thunderstorms are forecast over the southern half of the state, but insufficient deep moisture and weak upper level dynamic forcing will keep rainfall totals&nbsp;low.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FTB_20190711_WV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9812\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FTB_20190711_WV.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"562\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Riverine: As of 9:30AM there are no <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;NWS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;National Weather Service&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>NWS<\/span> Flood Warnings or Flood Advisories.&nbsp; The AHPS gage on the Arkansas River near La Junta retreated below action stage yesterday around noon but the gage on the Rio Grande near Alamosa remains at Action Stage.&nbsp; Most rivers have seen a gradual decrease in flow this week due to dry conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today&rsquo;s Flood Threat Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information on today&rsquo;s flood threat, see the map below.&nbsp; For Zone-Specific forecasts, scroll below the map.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/FTB_No_Flood_Threat_2019.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8803\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/FTB_No_Flood_Threat_2019.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"580\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Zone-Specific Forecasts:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Central Mountains, Front Range, Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge, Southeast Plains, Palmer Ridge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Midlevel moisture will increase over the region today, however low level and surface moisture remains low.&nbsp; Afternoon and evening thunderstorms can be expected over the area.&nbsp; A surface low is expected to form over the southern Front Range and Southeast plains by 3PM.&nbsp; This feature will provide lift for storms over the Southeast Plains and Raton Ridge, with max 1-hr rainfall rates of 0.7 inches over the area.&nbsp; Max 1-hr rainfall rates of 0.2 inches is forecast over the mountainous regions of the forecast area.&nbsp; Flooding is not expected today, with the main threat being <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> wind gusts up to 30 mph.&nbsp; High temperatures are forecast to reach 100&deg;F over the eastern plains and low laying areas of the western slope.&nbsp; Please use caution outdoors and stay hydrated.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 1PM to 1AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Grand Valley, Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The forecast area is expected to remain dry today, with chances for weak <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorms over the higher elevations.&nbsp; Storms may move into the southern Northeast Plains off of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection.
