{"id":9765,"date":"2019-07-08T08:55:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T14:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=9765"},"modified":"2019-07-09T09:17:46","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T15:17:46","slug":"ftb-07-08-2019-heavy-rainfall-forecast-for-the-northeast-plains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=9765","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-08-2019: Heavy Rainfall Forecast for the Northeast Plains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Monday, July, 8th, 2019<br>\nIssue Time: 9:10AM MDT<\/p>\n<p><em>&ndash;A <strong>LOW <\/strong>flood threat is issued for the Northeast Plains and portions of the Raton Ridge and Southeast Plains<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The water vapor imagery below is very active out in front of the upper <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span>, which is forecast to begin&nbsp; to move east throughout the day. This will increase southwest and then westerly flow over the state this afternoon into the overnight hours. Over the southwest corner of the state, dry air will begin to be advected into the area, which should keep storm activity more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> over western Colorado this afternoon. This will limit the higher accumulations to along and near the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. Over eastern Colorado, southeasterly winds at the surface will hold moisture in place over the eastern plains. A low over the Southeast Plains will cause <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;downsloping&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to the winds that blow from higher elevations down towards lower elevations. As air parcels descend, they warm, which often results in rapid warming of areas near the higher terrains. It also promotes lower relative humidity values and stability, which prevents thunderstorm development.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>downsloping<\/span> winds at the surface over the Southeast Mountains, so this should mix out moisture over the immediate adjacent plains. ENE movement of the storms at 15-20 knots paired with limited moisture over the mountains and immediate adjacent plains should limit the flood threat over these regions. As far as coverage, with strong lift out in front of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span>, storms this afternoon are expected to be more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> than the last couple of days.<\/p>\n<p>With <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> in the 60&deg;Fs over the Northeast Plains, slower steering winds and trailing storms possible, heavy rainfall is forecast beginning later this afternoon and last through this evening. Building instability over the area, as clouds begin to break up, will likely cause storms to intensify as they move into the area. Some severe storms are forecast thanks to weak <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span> from southeasterly surface winds. The main threats from the storms will be brief, strong winds, hail up to 1.75 inches, field ponding and flooding of low lying roadways. A Low flood threat has been issued.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wv_20190708.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9766\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wv_20190708.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"510\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Riverine:<\/h4>\n<p>As of 9AM this morning there are no <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;NWS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;National Weather Service&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>NWS<\/span> Flood Warnings. However there are Flood Advisories for the Blue River below Dillion and for the Roaring Fork River near Aspen from recent dam releases and decreasing water diversions. Minor lowland flooding can be expected over these areas through at least the middle of the week. Warm temperatures in the forecast will also add some more runoff from snowmelt. As far as AHPS gages in Action Stage, the Rio Grande continues to remain elevated, although flows are forecast to decrease the next couple of days across the SLV. The Avondale and La Junta gages along the Arkansas River are also at Action stage, so Minor lowland flooding will be possible. There have been some rises along the South Platte River thanks to recent rainfall over the Northeast Plains, but flooding is not anticipated along the river. Drier air and swift steering winds over the Southeast Mountains should keep burn areas safe from flooding issues this afternoon. Over the mountains and adjacent plains, max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.45 inches will be possible. Moving east to the Northeast Plains and eastern Palmer Ridge, max 1-hour rain rates up to 1.75 inches will be possible due to higher moisture, slower steering winds and trailing storms. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> storm totals up to 2 inches may be possible. Storms that form over the Raton Ridge and move into the southeast corner counties could produce 1-hour rain rates up to 1 inch. A Low flood threat has been issued with the flood threats being localized <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>, field ponding and flooding over low lying roads.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 1:30PM to 10PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northwest Slope, Grand Valley, Southwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Central Mountains, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Southwesterly flow is forecast to increase today and turn more westerly into tonight. Surface winds will increase this afternoon as well (southwest) with the approaching <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> tightening the pressure gradient. This will begin to pull a drier air mass into the state and decrease <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values. There will be enough residual moisture today for another round of storms over the mountains, but with more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> coverage.
