As the ridge builds over the Pacific Northwest, dry air will begin to be entrained into the state with more of a northerly flow aloft. This will also keep the subtropical moisture south of Colorado. This is expected to reduce the thunderstorm activity this afternoon; however, there is enough residual moisture under the ridge to initiate storms over the higher terrains. Currently, a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> over the Northeast Plains helped provide lift for some overnight thunderstorm and shower activity and is marked with the orange &ldquo;X&rdquo; below. This disturbance will linger to the south\/southeast over the plains through the early afternoon before eventually making its way into Kansas. Moderate rainfall and thunder are being reported now along with gusty winds and small hail, but flooding is not expected with these storms. With high <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> in the area (60F+), localized totals up to 1.4 inch are possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wv_20180808.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7946\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wv_20180808.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"405\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With more of a northerly flow aloft, storms separate from the ongoing plains <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span>, should be confined to the mountains with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> activity over the adjacent plains. The Denver sounding this morning showed moisture beginning to drop, and <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> was measured at 0.88 inches. Thus, the most likely area for thunderstorm development this afternoon is along the southern Front Range, Southeast Mountains and Palmer\/Raton Ridges. Though some more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>, short-lived storms are possible further north. Storm motion will be to the south at about 15-20 mph, so <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> flooding is not expected. Over western Colorado, dry air and the 500mb high confining subtropical moisture south, should nix the chances for measurable rainfall again this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh burn scars over the Southeast Mountains will be susceptible to mud flows and debris slides this afternoon. It can take as little as 0.5 inches\/hour to trigger the aforementioned threats and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> if a storm tracks directly over a scar. Due to rain rates up to 0.8 inches\/hour being possible, a Low flood threat has been issued for the Junkins, Hayden Pass and Spring Creek burn areas. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.5 inches (north) and 0.8 inches (south) are possible. A Low flood threat has been issued for the recent burn scars over the Southeast Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 1PM &ndash; 10PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Starting to heat up some more today, though hazy conditions from the smoke will likely knock down high temperature a couple degrees. The latest HRRR run indicates that the northerly flow aloft will start to cut off the inflow of smoke overnight. However, it will stick around to limit visibility today.
