In fact, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> today will remain above 50F over the adjacent plains of eastern Colorado. A passing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave trough<\/span> over WY\/UT will move through the state this afternoon before the ridge begins to build back over the Pacific Northwest for the rest of the week. This should arrive to the eastern half of Colorado around the same time as peak heating, which will make shower and thunderstorm coverage more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> along the Front Range and eastern plains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wv_20180806-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7912\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wv_20180806-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"509\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) values at Grand Junction and Denver are 0.61 inches and 1.01 inches, respectfully. The passing of the cold front overnight returned low-level moisture east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. Currently, the front is over the Southeast Plains with a surface low near the CO\/KS border. This should promote moist, upslope flow this afternoon behind it. This afternoon, high instability and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span> will promote some supercells and clusters of strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span> along and just east of I-25. As is common in moist and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;unstable&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the atmosphere is considered unstable if it is conducive to air attempting to rise; the opposite of stable; an unstable atmosphere is necessary for thunderstorms&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>unstable<\/span> environments, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span> from the first storms may help spark more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span>. Thunderstorms are also expected form along the Cheyenne Ridge, which if they do, would bring strong storms to the northern counties of Colorado including Weld and Morgan County. With the exception of the Palmer Ridge\/Front Range intersect, heavy rainfall should remain east of the higher terrains this afternoon, which is good news for the recent burn scars. Stronger storms will be possible over the Waldo Canyon area, so storms that track into this area will need to be monitored closely.<\/p>\n<p>Threats with the thunderstorms today include heavy rainfall, large hail and strong winds. Storm motion will be to the ESE at 20-25 mph, so <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> flooding is not anticipated. However, multiple storms over one area may be possible, which would increase the 24-hour totals and runoff in the area. Street flooding, field ponding and local stream flooding are all possible. A Moderate flood threat has been issued for the Palmer Ridge, southern Urban Corridor and Southern Front Range. However, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> are expected to remain in the 60Fs over the eastern plains with at least 50F <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> over the Urban Corridor. This will set the stage for some heavy rainfall this afternoon; however, storm motion should be fast enough to prevent <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> flooding. Max 1-hr rain rates up to 1.85 inches\/hour are possible further east with 1 inch\/hour possible over the Front Range. Localized 24-hour totals just over 2 inches are also possible east of I-25, but dry soils should be able to absorb a lot of moisture and also help prevent <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> flooding. Threats with the stronger thunderstorms today include severe hail, strong winds and local, heavy rainfall. Street and small stream flooding may be possible, especially over low-lying roads. A Moderate and Low flood threat has been issued.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 2PM &ndash; 4AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Skies should be mostly clear with a few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> clouds over the higher terrains. Virga can cause strong, but short-lived, localized winds (dry microburst).&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>virga<\/span>.
