This flow will continue to hold high moisture in-place to the east and rotate upper-level disturbances from Arizona into the state. The disturbances can been seen in the water vapor imagery below (green) and will help enhance lift later this afternoon. Upslope flow is expected to initiate <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>numerous<\/span> showers and thunderstorms over the higher terrains early this afternoon as low-level winds become perpendicular to the higher terrains. Best initial coverage of storms today will be along the Front Range and Southeast Mountains. Low-level moisture over the San Juan and Central Mountains decreases throughout the day, so storms will produce more gusty winds and dry lightning this afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/wv_20180723.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7714\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/wv_20180723.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"363\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ample moisture remains east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, which brings the threat of heavy rainfall again this afternoon. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Dew points<\/span> are expected to remain in the 50sF (west) to 60sF range (east), so rainfall efficiencies will intensify when compared to yesterday. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> at Denver this morning was 1.21 inches, which is in the 90<sup>th<\/sup> percentile for this date and 0.1 inches below the daily max. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Numerous<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span> from yesterday&rsquo;s <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span> will also help trigger thunderstorms over the eastern plains in the high moisture environment. As storms move into the adjacent plains off the mountains, their movement will be to the southeast at about 20 knots. This should help limit the threat to an hour, although the potential mesoscale convective system (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;MCS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Mesoscale Convective System) A complex of thunderstorms that produces a large, contiguous area of precipitation on the order of 100 km or more in the horizontal scale and normally persist for several hours or more.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>MCS<\/span>) will still produce rain rates capable of heavy rainfall and flooding of low-lying areas, roads and local streams. There will likely be a second round of showers this evening for the adjacent plains as <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span> will continue to kick off showers and thunderstorms in the moist environment. The thunderstorms will eventually turn into showers as instability decreases, but will likely linger over the Southeast Plains and Palmer Ridge into tomorrow morning. The flood threat will also decrease overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Recent burn scars over the Southeast Mountains will need to be monitored closely today. Rain rates up to 1 inch\/hour are possible, which would cause <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>, mud flows and debris slides. A High Flood threat has been issued for these scars and portions of the Urban Corridor, Palmer Ridge and Southeast Plains. Showers and thunderstorms should kick off just after noon over the higher terrains. Over the higher terrains max 1-hour rain rates up to 1.25 inches are possible, which could trigger mud flows, debris slides and local stream flooding. Rain rates increase over the adjacent plains with 1-hour rain rates around 1.75 inches\/hour. Localized 1-hour rain rates&nbsp;over 2 inches\/hour are not out of the question in areas of the highest low-level moisture. A High flood threat has been issued for portions of these regions with the largest threat over the Urban Corridor, Palmer Ridge and Southeast Plains. A High flood threat has also been issued for all recent burn scars over the Southeast Mountains as storms could trigger debris slides and local stream flooding that track over these areas. Thunderstorms and showers will continue to rumble into the night, but the flood threat should decrease after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 12PM to 7AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Northern Mountains, Grand Valley, Central Mountains, Northwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Low-level moisture won&rsquo;t be quite as high over western Colorado. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.4 inches\/hour are possible over the higher terrain this afternoon.
