{"id":7654,"date":"2018-07-17T09:18:44","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T15:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=7654"},"modified":"2018-07-18T05:51:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T11:51:24","slug":"ftb-07-17-2018-high-moisture-paired-with-upper-dynamics-increase-the-flood-threat-for-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=7654","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-17-2018: High Moisture Paired with Upper Dynamics Increase the Flood Threat for Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Tuesday, July 17th, 2018<br>\nIssue Time: 09:25AM MDT<\/p>\n<p><em>&mdash; A <strong>MODERATE<\/strong> flood threat has been issued for portions of the Palmer Ridge, Southeast Plains and Northeast Plains as well as the recent burn scars over the San Juan Mountains and Southeast Mountains<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;&mdash; A <strong>LOW<\/strong> flood threat has been issued for the San Juan Mountains, Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge, Front Range and Urban Corridor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Much cooler start to the day with cloud cover over a large portion of the state thanks to the <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;MCS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Mesoscale Convective System) A complex of thunderstorms that produces a large, contiguous area of precipitation on the order of 100 km or more in the horizontal scale and normally persist for several hours or more.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>MCS<\/span> that moved through the NE panhandle into KS overnight. Today the low pressure over the Pacific Northwest will start to migrate to the east breaking down the ridging pattern to our west. This will push some upper disturbances (marked in orange) over the state, which will provide lift for more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> thunderstorm activity this afternoon. Over the eastern plains, low level easterly winds will pull in plentiful moisture with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> reaching the mid 50Fs to 60F later this afternoon. That means paired with sunshine, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Higher values indicate a greater potential for stronger updrafts, thus an increase in the potential for thunderstorms and severe weather.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CAPE<\/span> will also be able to build throughout the day. So as the storms fire over the higher terrains this afternoon and move into the adjacent plains, they will move into a favorable severe weather environment. Storms are expected to merge into a line, which will be capable of producing large hail and strong winds. With <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values well over 1 inch, (Denver&rsquo;s sounding had a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> value of 1.15 inches) local, heavy rainfall is expected. A Low and Moderate flood threat have been issued. Storms that track over burn scars should be monitored closely as there is high confidence rain rates will exceed 0.5 inches\/hour.<\/p>\n<p>Over the San Juan Mountains, subtropical moisture is able to hold on for one more day. The GEFS is projecting <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values greater than 1 inch this afternoon, which means there is a threat for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> again this afternoon with burn scars being the most susceptible. A Low flood threat has been issued with the recent burn scars under a Moderate flood threat. Storms will likely fire around noon with upslope flow and the flood threat should diminish as instability decreases after sundown. Further north over the Central and Northern Mountains, afternoon thunderstorm activity will be much more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 1.1 inches are possible to the west. With deeper moisture over the plains, max 1-hour rain rates up to 2 inches are possible with local totals exceeding 2.3 inches. Threats include local stream and road flooding with debris slides and mud flows possible over the higher terrains. Burn scars will be especially susceptible to flooding, so a Moderate flood threat has been issued for those. A Low\/Moderate flood threat has been issued for these regions. Storms over the eastern plains will also be capable of producing large hail and damaging winds.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 1PM to 1AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Northern Mountains, Grand Valley, Central Mountains, Northwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>High <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values over the San Juan Mountains means another day for a Low flood threat with a Moderate flood threat for the burn scars. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 1 inch are possible. This could trigger mud flows and debris slides along with local stream flooding. Further north, storms will be more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> in nature. A couple thunderstorms may move into the lower elevations from Utah. Max 1-hour rain rates will be closer to 0.5 inches\/hour.
