At the surface, much of the state remains dry, especially west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, but a cool front working into eastern Colorado from the north will reinforce moisture in that part of the state. It is those areas along\/east of the Front Range and north of Highway 50 that will experience the bulk of thunderstorm activity today\/tonight, as <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms will work off the moisture, daytime heating, upslope flow, and surface convergence provided by the cool front and any subsequent <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundary&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundary<\/span> collisions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SFC_20180704.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7498 \" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SFC_20180704.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"514\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over the High Country, cumulus clouds will develop during the afternoon\/evening hours over the higher elevations thanks to daytime heating and orographic lift. A couple <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> high-based showers\/weak thunderstorms will dot the sky, with the main result being plenty of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface. Virga can cause strong, but short-lived, localized winds (dry microburst).&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>virga<\/span> and sporadic gusty winds, with the best chance at wetting rainfall over eastern portions of the Central Mountains.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today&rsquo;s Flood Threat Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information on today&rsquo;s flood threat, see the map below (hover over threat areas for more details). For Zone-Specific forecasts, jump below the map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/no_threat.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6157\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/no_threat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"580\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-135\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/floodthreat_legend2.png\" alt=\"Flood Threat Legend\" width=\"275\" height=\"71\"\/><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Zone-Specific Forecasts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Urban Corridor, Palmer Ridge, Northeast Plains, Southeast Plains, and Raton Ridge:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For areas south of Highway 50, including the Raton Ridge, an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorm or two will be possible east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dryline&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A low-level, small-scale boundary that separates dry air from moist air. Storms develop along it because the dry air (behind the boundary) is less dense than the moisture-rich air (ahead of the boundary). Typically, it advances eastward during the afternoon and retreats westward at night.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dryline<\/span>, which includes the counties of Bent, Prowers, Baca, and eastern Las Animas. Periods of brief moderate-to-heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds will be the main threats.<\/p>\n<p>Areas to the north of Highway 50 will be the locations that experience the bulk of thunderstorm activity in the state today, as the cool front reinforces some low-level moisture and provides surface convergence and a bit of weak upslope flow. Generally speaking, the main threat from thunderstorms today will be hail and strong winds. A relative lack of good <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>wind shear<\/span> and deep moisture will prevent storms from producing the heavy rainfall necessary for a flood threat, but one or two storms will be capable of producing brief periods of moderate-to-heavy rainfall. A bit of street\/field ponding in poorly drained areas, or those areas where hail accumulation clogs drainage, is possible, but that will be about it.<\/p>\n<p>Maximum rain rates are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Front Range: 0.3-0.6 inches\/hour<br>\nUrban Corridor: 0.4-0.8 inches\/hour<br>\nPalmer Ridge: 0.5-1.0 inches\/hour<br>\nNortheast Plains and Southeast Plains: 0.8-1.25 inches\/hour<br>\nRaton Ridge: 0.3-0.6 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 2 PM &ndash; 10 PM, with a few storms lingering until midnight (or just after) across the eastern plains<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, Central Mountains, Grand Valley, San Juan Mountains, Southeast Mountains, San Luis Valley, and Southwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures will mark Independence Day across the area, with a few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> high-based showers\/weak thunderstorms dotting the sky during the afternoon\/evening hours. Any storm activity will remain confined to the higher elevations, mainly over the Southeast Slope, San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains, Southeast Mountains, and Northern Mountains. Streaks of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface.
