At 500mb there is also a Low pressure system off the coast of southern California. With a broad area of higher pressure aloft over Texas, the gradient between the Low and High pressure has advected a plume of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> moisture into the state. With slow and variable steering winds aloft under the ridge, the increase in moisture has brought a High Flood Threat to Colorado tomorrow and an Elevated Flood Threat through Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/wv-20170821.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6052\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/wv-20170821.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"410\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below are the forecasted <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. The <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> began to increase Sunday afternoon, but is expected to peak Tuesday evening. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> will be higher than the long-term normal at both locations and could reach as high as 1.3 inches over SE Colorado. This setup is similar to the active period at the end of July, except no mid-level high pressure is well-defined over Texas during the full period. This may limit the intensity of the moisture <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;advection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The process of transport of an atmospheric property, typically temperature or moisture in our FTB discussions, by the wind. &amp;quot;Strong&rdquo; or &amp;quot;weak&rdquo; advection refers to the rate of change of the advected property&amp;#039;s value at a given point.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>advection<\/span> and confine the higher moisture to southern Colorado and the eastern plains. The surge of moisture, and antecedent atmospheric moisture, hangs around through Sunday evening. The extended period of active weather has been labeled as Event #1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/pw-plumes-20170821.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6053\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/pw-plumes-20170821.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"303\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the upper-level low pressure system begins to move eastward. With the elevated&nbsp;moisture in the atmosphere, this extra energy could support stronger storms and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> rainfall over the eastern plains. There is enough confidence to identify this period as an elevated threat, although the full details of this event are still developing. A mid-level Low\/High pressure gradient has created a strong southerly component to the flow that is advecting moisture into Colorado. Short-term heavy rainfall will be likely over the climatologically favored regions of southwestern Colorado, Southeast Mountains and Palmer Ridge daily throughout this week. On Thursday, the mid-level Low pressure system will move through Colorado and is expected to produce another round of heavy precipitation that could last into the overnight hours. Max 1-hour rainfall rates greater than 1.5 inches (east) and 1.0 (west) are expected tomorrow afternoon and evening. With slow steering winds under the ridge and elevated&nbsp;moisture, it is likely&nbsp;max 1-hour rain rates could exceed those same thresholds throughout the week. Threats include <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> as well as debris slides and mud flows over the higher terrains and susceptible burn scars.
