The disturbance&rsquo;s passage will coincide with the maximum heating of the day, which will increase thunderstorm activity compared to yesterday. However, despite favorable upper-level dynamics, one important missing piece to heavy rainfall today is low-level moisture. Although morning dewpoints are in the 40s and 50s, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> values are only around 0.6 inches. More importantly, since the disturbance is arriving from the northwest, this will allow dry air to mix down the eastern side of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Divide<\/span>. The end result is that only eastern Colorado will have enough low-level moisture to warrant a low flood threat. There, in addition to heavy rainfall, large hail up to 1.75 inches and wind gusts up to 60 mph are all possible with stronger storms. Away from the threat area, expect <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms with one hour rain rates in the 0.2 to 0.5 inch range, along with small hail up to 0.5 inches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/watervapor_20150528.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-603\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/watervapor_20150528.png\" alt=\"watervapor_20150528\" width=\"836\" height=\"470\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flood&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flood<\/span> threat today, the Arkansas and South Platte Rivers continue to run in minor flood stage. Today&rsquo;s activity is very unlikely to significantly impact either river. Hourly rainfall up to 0.4 inches will be possible, along with small hail up to 0.5 inches and gusty winds up to 60 mph. No flooding is expected today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northern Mountains, Central Mountains and San Juan Mountains:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms developing by early afternoon. Hourly rainfall up to 0.6 inches will be possible, along with small hail and gusty winds. No flooding is expected today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Front Range, Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains, Southeast Plains and Palmer Ridge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Becoming partly cloudy with thunderstorms developing by early afternoon. Closer to the mountains, hourly rain rates up to 0.7 inches will be possible. Farther east, stronger storms will be capable of up to 1.8 inches per hour of rainfall. A Low flood threat has been posted for the eastern part of the Palmer Ridge and the entire Kansas border. The strongest storms will be capable of 1.75 inch hail, and winds up to 60 mph.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Time: 2pm through 9pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mostly sunny early, then becoming partly cloudy. An <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> high based thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. However, the passage of a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dryline&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A low-level, small-scale boundary that separates dry air from moist air. Storms develop along it because the dry air (behind the boundary) is less dense than the moisture-rich air (ahead of the boundary). Typically, it advances eastward during the afternoon and retreats westward at night.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dryline<\/span> will lower dewpoints into the 20s and 30s preventing heavy rainfall. Gusty winds up to 35 mph will be likely in the afternoon, but the fire danger is not of concern due to wet soils.
