Speaking strictly from the perspective of upper-level flow, this pattern is not all that impressive. With a continuation of a modestly strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;jet stream&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Relatively strong winds concentrated within a narrow stream in the atmosphere. General weather patterns are related closely to the position, strength and orientation of the jet stream.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>jet stream<\/span> positioned just north of Colorado, this time of year, such a pattern would not strike one as being particularly rainy across out state. The big wildcard, however, is the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;train&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Continuous or repeated rainfall over the same region&nbsp;in a relatively short time span. Training thunderstorms can produce very high rainfall totals and cause flash flooding.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>train<\/span> of surface high pressure systems that will be coming down out of Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/wv_markup-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5841 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/wv_markup-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"368\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is well depicted in the forecasted sea-level pressure anomaly maps from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tropicaltidbits.com\/\">Tropical Tidbits<\/a> website, shown below. The maps show conditions for this afternoon, this coming Sunday (8\/13) and next Thursday (8\/17). Note the remarkably similar conditions across Colorado and the northern Great Plains as anomalously strong high pressures are forecasted. The implication of such a pattern for our state is two-fold. First, it promotes southeasterly winds that typically allow for access to above normal moisture levels and in turn, heavy rainfall chances. Second, note the relatively strong surface pressure gradients, which allows for an increased amount of moisture convergence. Stated differently, instead of typical high-elevation storms to be &ldquo;one and done&rdquo; in the sense that they quickly decay once they move eastward off the higher terrain, storms persist longer and create <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span>. In turn, this supports larger storm complexes where 3-hour and 6-hour windows of heavy rainfall are possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/gfs_sfc_mslp_anom_3panel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5838\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/gfs_sfc_mslp_anom_3panel.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"520\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the pattern described above only favors above normal precipitation east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. In short, the moisture provided by the surface high pressures cannot readily make it over the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Divide<\/span>. This is readily shown in the forecasted <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) plumes from the GFS ensembles. While Denver stays above normal basically the entire next 8 days, Grand Junction drops below normal and stays there. Thus, while we expect some monsoonal moisture and very <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> heavy rainfall to be possible in the climatologically favored southwest areas, the rest of the western slope will be on the drier side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/gefs_pw-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5842\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/gefs_pw-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"238\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have identified one prolonged precipitation event for this Outlook, which is described in more detail below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #1: Tuesday (8\/7) through Wednesday (8\/16)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Prolonged Elevated Flood Threat <\/strong><\/span>for daily rounds of heavy rainfall east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>; Arkansas River basin will be vulnerable to riverine flooding<\/p>\n<p>With <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> continuing to stay at or above 1 inch east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, daily rounds of shower and thunderstorm activity are expected. Storms will form off the higher terrain first but then track eastward for at least several hours, especially over the Palmer and Raton Ridges. Max 1-hour rainfall up to 2.4 inches (east) and 1.9 inches (west) will be possible, supporting <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>, small stream flooding and street flooding in urban areas. In addition, max 3-hour rainfall up to 3.1 inches (east) and 2.5 inches (west) will support mud flows and debris slides, especially in regions with saturated soils. In addition, the threat of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> severe weather (mainly large hail) will exist especially towards the Kansas border.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the short-term hazards described above, <strong>we are now more confident that the Arkansas River and its major tributaries (namely: Monument Creek, Fountain Creek, Purgatoire River, Huerfano River, Apishapa River) will be in a prolonged elevated risk of riverine flooding<\/strong>. Current flows in the Arkansas River basin are above the 75<sup>th<\/sup> percentile at many locations and saturated soils will promote very efficient runoff.
