{"id":4399,"date":"2017-05-09T09:38:07","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T15:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=4399"},"modified":"2017-05-10T08:02:37","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T14:02:37","slug":"ftb-05-09-2017-unsettled-period-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=4399","title":{"rendered":"FTB 05-09-2017: Unsettled Period Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 5\/9\/2017<br>\nIssue Time: 9:40 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST TODAY FOR PORTIONS OF THE RATON RIDGE, SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS, FRONT RANGE, URBAN CORRIDOR, PALMER RIDGE, SOUTHEAST PLAINS, AND NORTHEAST PLAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST TODAY FOR SURROUNDING AREAS, INCLUDING PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, AND CENTRAL MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS ALSO FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHWEST SLOPE, GRAND VALLEY, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, AND SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The upper-level low will continue to linger to the southwest of Colorado, becoming centered over southeastern AZ by tonight. This will allow the anomalous influx of moisture into Colorado to continue, resulting in a second-consecutive day of a moderate flood threat. According to this morning&rsquo;s soundings from Denver and Grand Junction, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> is in the 90th and 75th percentiles, respectively, for the date. This moisture, combined with large-scale support and sufficient instability\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>wind shear<\/span>, will result in <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms, where a few will be strong-to-severe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/WV_20170509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4400 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/WV_20170509.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"338\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Much of the state is expected to get in on the action today, with the strongest storms expected east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Severe thunderstorms<\/span> will be capable of heavy rain, strong winds, hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and a couple tornadoes.
