{"id":3921,"date":"2016-09-22T09:40:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T15:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=3921"},"modified":"2016-09-23T09:41:38","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T15:41:38","slug":"ftb-09-22-2016-another-unsettled-period-with-isolated-strongsevere-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=3921","title":{"rendered":"FTB 09-22-2016: Another Unsettled Period with Isolated Strong\/Severe Storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 9\/22\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 9:40 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHWEST SLOPE, GRAND VALLEY, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, AND SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A fairly active day is in store for the High Country and Western Slope, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/storms filtering across eastern Colorado. The &ldquo;Chance of Precipitation&rdquo; from our internal tool highlights this well (image below). The upper-level low will continue its shift into the Great Basin, bringing two major factors that are leading to the active day:<\/p>\n<p>1. Increasing moisture, mainly in the low- and mid-levels, will result in greater fuel for showers\/storms<br>\n2. Providing broad-scale, dynamic support for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>numerous<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/POP_20160922.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-3922 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/POP_20160922.png\" alt=\"pop_20160922\" width=\"461\" height=\"317\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those two factors, paired with better instability than previous days, will lead to better shower\/thunderstorm coverage, with an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> strong\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> mixed in. Stronger storms will be capable of brief periods of heavy rainfall, but quick storm motions will reduce the risk of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>. With all factors considered, a low flood threat is warranted for the regions mentioned in the italicized line above. East of the mountains, much of the moisture will reside between 3 km and 5 km above ground level, helping to reduce the risk of heavy rainfall. Primary threats from stronger thunderstorms will be strong, gusty winds (up to 45 mph), small hail, and lightning. Maximum rain rates will be as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Urban Corridor and Raton Ridge: 0.4-0.7 inches\/hour<br>\nSoutheast Plains: 0.6-1.0 inches\/hour<br>\nPalmer Ridge: 0.3-0.6 inches\/hour<br>\nNortheast Plains: 0.6-0.9 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 1 PM &ndash; 11 PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Southeast Mountains, Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Luis Valley, Central Mountains, and Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Numerous<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms are expected throughout today and tonight, with the best coverage over the San Juan Mountains, Southwest Slope, Grand Valley, and Northwest Slope. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> severe storms will mix in along\/near the Utah border, with the main threats being damaging wind gusts and lightning. In addition to the showers\/thunderstorms, tightening pressure gradients will result in strong\/gusty winds throughout the day, with many High Wind Warnings issued.
