{"id":3401,"date":"2016-08-11T10:02:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-11T16:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=3401"},"modified":"2016-08-12T06:19:13","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T12:19:13","slug":"ftb-08-11-2016-isolated-west-scattered-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=3401","title":{"rendered":"FTB 08-11-2016: Isolated West, Scattered East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 8\/11\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 9:58 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHEAST PLAINS, PALMER RIDGE, AND SOUTHEAST PLAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Current water vapor analysis shows the upper-level <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> swinging across western states, with the base of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> over the Great Basin. At the surface, a cool front is draped across the far northeast plains and back across southern Wyoming. This front will swing through eastern Colorado today, providing a focus for the development of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms. Out west, drier air will be transported in from the west-southwest, keeping IPW values subdued (green line = Grand Junction) and limiting shower\/thunderstorm activity. A few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> showers\/storms are still expected over the higher terrain, but will mainly result in gusty winds, lightning, and periods of light-to-moderate rainfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IPW_20160811.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-3402 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IPW_20160811.png\" alt=\"IPW_20160811\" width=\"514\" height=\"226\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along the I-25 corridor and into the foothills, the atmospheric profile shows the same <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Inverted-V&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to the shape of the lower levels of an atmospheric profile. The shape of the &amp;quot;Inverted V&rdquo; is the result of dry air below cloud level, which promotes strong winds and evaporation of precipitation before reaching the surface.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>inverted-V<\/span> characteristics as yesterday. This will lead any showers\/storms in those areas to produce gusty winds, lightning, and light-to-moderate rainfall. Brief heavy downpours will be possible if any storms interact with others <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span>, but this chance is small enough to not warrant any flood threat outlines.<\/p>\n<p>Further east, moisture content is better, with IPW values between 0.9-1.3 inches for much of the eastern Plains per the latest analysis. This amount of moisture will help storms produce efficient rainfall, with storms capable of producing rain at 1.5-2.5 inches\/hour. Relatively quick storm motions will help reduce the flood threat. With these considerations in mind, only a low flood threat is warranted. For Zone-Specific forecasts, jump below the map.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160811_LFT.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160811_LFT.png\" alt=\"20160811_LFT\" width=\"887\" height=\"496\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3410\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-135\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/floodthreat_legend2.png\" alt=\"Flood Threat Legend\" width=\"275\" height=\"71\"\/><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Zone-Specific Forecasts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains, Palmer Ridge, Southeast Plains and Raton Ridge:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers\/storms are expected, with the heaviest rain\/strongest storms occurring east of the I-25 corridor. Stronger storms will be capable of producing hail (up to 1.5 inches in diameter), strong winds (gusts up to 60 mph), and locally heavy rainfall. Main flooding concerns will be small streams and normally dry creeks, as well as street\/field ponding. Maximum rain rates will be 1.5-2.5 inches\/hour for the Palmer Ridge, Northeast Plains, and Southeast Plains, and 0.6-0.8 inches\/hour for the Urban Corridor and Raton Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Noon &ndash; Midnight, with a few storms continuing into the morning hours<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Northern Mountains, Southeast Mountains, Northwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Luis Valley, Central Mountains, and Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widely scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;10-25% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widely scattered<\/span> showers\/storms expected, mainly over the higher terrain. The best coverage will occur over the Northern Mountains, Front Range, and Southeast Mountains, with slightly lesser coverage elsewhere.
