{"id":3277,"date":"2016-08-01T10:21:50","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T16:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=3277"},"modified":"2016-08-02T06:24:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-02T12:24:11","slug":"ftb-08-01-2016-threat-shifts-south-with-the-moisture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=3277","title":{"rendered":"FTB 08-01-2016: Threat Shifts South with the Moisture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 8\/1\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 10:17 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE GRAND VALLEY, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS, SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS, RATON RIDGE, AND SOUTHEAST PLAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Drier air is poised to move into the northern third of Colorado behind the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave trough<\/span> that passed through Colorado last night. The drying is showing up in the morning&rsquo;s IPW <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trace&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;a descriptor used when precipitation occurs, but the amount is too small (less than 0.01&amp;quot;) to be measured by a weather instrument such as a rain gauge&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trace<\/span> (chart below) with Boulder falling below 0.8 inches. A bit of mid-level warming will accompany the drying as the ridging builds slightly over the area, weakly capping the environment. A few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> showers\/weak thunderstorms will still develop, mainly over the mountains, owing to the influence of orographic effects. Most of the Northeast Plains will remain <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;capped&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>capped<\/span> and dry, especially areas north and east of a line from Alvin to Fort Morgan to Hereford, which is a nice change from recent days of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> rainfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IPW_20160801.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-3278 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IPW_20160801.png\" alt=\"IPW_20160801\" width=\"519\" height=\"231\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Further to the south, there will be plenty of moisture available to showers\/thunderstorms, resulting in efficient rainfall from any activity. Over the mountains, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms are expected, with the best coverage expected over the higher terrain of the Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, and Central Mountains. Instability\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span> values will be sufficient enough to produce a couple of stronger storms capable of locally heavy rainfall; thus, the issuance of the low flood threat.<\/p>\n<p>To the east, the Southeast Mountains and Raton Ridge will be dotted with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms capable of heavy rainfall. The IPW value (~1.2 inches) measured at Pueblo is the highest of the four normal reporting stations (see chart above). A weak disturbance will work across the area and then over the Southeast Plains this afternoon\/evening, which will trigger <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/storms over the plains. A couple storms will be strong\/marginally severe, with the main threats being hail, strong winds, and periods of heavy rainfall. Locations near the mountains and Palmer Ridge will see the most coverage, relatively speaking, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms. Locally heavy rainfall will attend the strongest storms, thus the issuance of the low flood threat. Maximum rain rates are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Southeast Mountains: 1.0-1.4 inches\/hour<br>\nRaton Ridge: 1.2-1.6 inches\/hour<br>\nSoutheast Plains: 1.5-2.2 inches\/hour<br>\nPalmer Ridge: 0.6-0.9 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 11 AM &ndash; 1 AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains and Northwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Much of the area will remain dry today, with only <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> showers\/weak storms over the higher terrain. Drier air will keep rain rates down, resulting in gusty winds and lightning as the main threats. Locally heavy rainfall is a concern with IPW values near, or just above, 1 inch.
