{"id":3191,"date":"2016-07-24T09:54:48","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T15:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=3191"},"modified":"2016-07-25T05:54:06","modified_gmt":"2016-07-25T11:54:06","slug":"ftb-07-24-2016-presence-of-a-cool-front-reinforces-moisture-provides-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=3191","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-24-2016: Presence of a Cool Front Reinforces Moisture, Provides Focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 7\/24\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 9:51 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE URBAN CORRIDOR, PALMER RIDGE, SOUTHEAST PLAINS, NORTHEAST PLAINS, AND FRONT RANGE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR SURROUNDING AREAS, INCLUDING PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS, RATON RIDGE, AND SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The current water vapor analysis (below) shows two main features of note: a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> tracking across the northern US, and a strong upper-level high across the southern US. The <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave trough<\/span> has flattened the ridge and turned the flow aloft to a more westerly direction, which will continue to shift drier air into Colorado from the west. Ahead of this dry air, however, the plume of subtropical air is still situated across Colorado. The moisture aloft will, in itself, provide fuel for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms, but it is what is occurring at the surface that will drive the low-to-moderate flood threat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/WV_20160724.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-3192 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/WV_20160724.png\" alt=\"WV_20160724\" width=\"517\" height=\"389\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A surface cool front has moved into Northeast Colorado this morning, and will settle along\/near the Palmer Ridge this afternoon. North of the front temperatures will be 5-10 degrees cooler than yesterday, and south of the front temperatures will be comparable to yesterday. More importantly for our product is that behind the cool front, moist upslope flow has developed, deepening the moisture available to showers and thunderstorms. IPW values will climb near\/above one inch along the Front Range and eastward across the plains during the afternoon and evening hours. Additionally, the cool front will provide a focus for thunderstorm development, and storms anchoring to, or near, this boundary will present both a severe threat and an enhanced heavy rain threat.<\/p>\n<p>Also, as the winds turn southeast behind the front and across the Palmer Ridge, a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Denver Cyclone&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A subset of the Denver Convergence Vorticity Zone (DCVZ) in which the feature takes on a low-level cyclonic circulation, rather than an elongated area of convergent winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Denver Cyclone<\/span> is expected to develop. This will place Douglas and Elbert Counties under the gun for strong\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> producing heavy rain. These areas have been included in the moderate flood threat. Along and west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms are expected again today, mainly over the higher terrain. For reasons outlined in the discussion above, the low-to-moderate flood threat is warranted. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;training&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Continuous or repeated rainfall over the same region&nbsp;in a relatively short time span. Training thunderstorms can produce very high rainfall totals and cause flash flooding.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Training<\/span> storms along the cool front\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Denver Cyclone&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A subset of the Denver Convergence Vorticity Zone (DCVZ) in which the feature takes on a low-level cyclonic circulation, rather than an elongated area of convergent winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Denver Cyclone<\/span> are a concern, and those concerns have been taken into consideration by the moderate flood threat area. Maximum rain rates are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Urban Corridor and Palmer Ridge: 1.5-2.0 inches\/hour<br>\nSoutheast Plains and Southeast Plains: 2.0-3.0 inches\/hour<br>\nRaton Ridge: 1.0-1.6 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 1 PM &ndash; 9 PM for most, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms continuing across the Southeast Plains and eastern portions of the Palmer Ridge\/Raton Ridge until Midnight.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Southeast Mountains, Northern Mountains, San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, Northwest Slope, Grand Valley, and San Luis Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms are expected, mainly over the higher terrain. The best coverage will occur across the San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains, Front Range, and Southeast Mountains, with lesser coverage elsewhere. The Northwest Slope and Grand Valley will see the least amount of activity today as drier air aloft continues to move in.
