{"id":2710,"date":"2016-06-12T10:01:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-12T16:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=2710"},"modified":"2016-06-12T10:01:58","modified_gmt":"2016-06-12T16:01:58","slug":"ftb-06-12-2016-ingredients-coming-together-for-moderate-flood-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=2710","title":{"rendered":"FTB 06-12-2016: Ingredients Coming Together for Moderate Flood Threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 6\/12\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 10:00 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHEAST PLAINS, SOUTHEAST PLAINS, PALMER RIDGE, RATON RIDGE, URBAN CORRIDOR, AND FRONT RANGE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT SURROUNDS THE MODERATE FLOOD THREAT, AND ALSO INCLUDES PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, AND SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE GREEN RIVER IN WEST CENTRAL MOFFAT COUNTY, THE CACHE LA POUDRE RIVER AT THE CANYON MOUTH AFFECTING LARIMER COUNTY, AND THE CACHE LA POUDRE RIVER NEAR GREELEY AFFECTING WELD COUNTY.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Current analysis shows an upper-level <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> digging across the western US, slowly sliding into the Great Basin today. At the surface, a weak cool front has sagged southward into eastern Colorado, and will continue to do so through the remainder of today\/tonight. Behind the front, winds will take on a more easterly component this afternoon, enhancing the low-level moisture that is already above average. In fact, according to the 12Z Denver sounding, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> this morning is in the 90th percentile. A quick look at the IPW chart below reveals the good moisture available, especially for Pueblo (pink line) which is near 1 inch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IPW_20160612.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-2711 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IPW_20160612.png\" alt=\"IPW_20160612\" width=\"544\" height=\"239\"\/><\/a><br>\nFor areas along\/east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms are expected today\/tonight. Sufficient moisture and warm layer depths of ~3 km will result in efficient rain processes, bringing the threat of heavy rain to the forefront today. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Wind shear<\/span> isn&rsquo;t substantial, but combined with sufficient instability and moisture, a few organized strong-to-severe storms are expected. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Outflow boundaries<\/span> working westward off of eastern plains <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span> may regenerate storms along the Front Range\/Urban Corridor\/Palmer Ridge overnight, working eastward with time. Overall, things will quiet down as we move into tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<p>Turning our attention west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, moisture will decrease this afternoon across much of the area as drier air is transported in from the southwest. This drier air will bring a relative minimum to thunderstorm coverage (and potential rain rates) across the western third of the state. Thus, these locations are not included in the low flood threat area. Heavy rain will be the main threat, with maximum rain rates as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Urban Corridor: 1.6-2.2 inches\/hour<br>\nPalmer Ridge and Raton Ridge: 1.8-2.6 inches\/hour<br>\nSoutheast Plains and Northeast Plains: 2.5-3.0 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>A few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms may regenerate overnight near the higher terrain, moving eastward with time. Chance of occurrence is 30%, so it warrants a mention.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Noon &ndash; Midnight, but a few storms will continue into the early morning hours tomorrow<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Northern Mountains, Central Mountains, and Southeast Mountains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> thunderstorms are expected today\/tonight. Instability will be less across these regions as compared to lower elevations to the east, but sufficient moisture\/lift\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>wind shear<\/span> will allow for a few stronger storms to produce moderate-to-heavy rain. Maximum rain rates are follows:<\/p>\n<p>Front Range: 1.5-2.0 inches\/hour<br>\nNorthern Mountains, Central Mountains, and Southeast Mountains: 0.9-1.3 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>A few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> storms may regenerate tonight along the Front Range, moving eastward with time. Chance of occurrence is 30%, so it warrants a mention.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 11 AM &ndash; 10 PM, with a couple showers\/storms lingering into the early morning<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Grand Valley and Southwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms expected today, mainly over\/near the higher terrain. Gusty winds and lightning will be the main threats, with brief periods of moderate rainfall. The best coverage, relatively speaking, with be across the San Juan Mountains. Activity will come to an end from south to north this evening, diminishing fairly quickly after sunset. A couple showers may redevelop tomorrow morning near the CO\/UT along the edge of the next moisture surge.
