{"id":2655,"date":"2016-06-06T10:25:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T16:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=2655"},"modified":"2016-06-06T10:25:10","modified_gmt":"2016-06-06T16:25:10","slug":"ftb-06-06-2016-strong-to-severe-storms-pose-a-low-to-moderate-flood-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=2655","title":{"rendered":"FTB 06-06-2016: Strong-to-Severe Storms Pose a Low-to-Moderate Flood Threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 6\/6\/2016<br>\nIssue Time: 10:24 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE FRONT RANGE, URBAN CORRIDOR AND PALMER RIDGE REGIONS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE URBAN CORRIDOR, NORTHEAST PLAINS, PALMER RIDGE, FRONT RANGE, NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS, RATON RIDGE, AND SOUTHEAST PLAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A weak upper ridge will be in place over western Colorado through this period, placing weak, northwest flow aloft over the mountains and eastern Colorado. Within this setup, the upper-levels will be weakly diffluent, promoting upward motion through this afternoon\/evening. At the low- and mid-levels, easterly upslope flow will reinforce\/enhance moisture from the surface to approximately 700 millibars. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable water<\/span> in the 12Z Denver sounding (0.70 inches) was near the 90th percentile for the date. As you can see below, Pueblo IPW (pink line) was nearing 1 inch, and the general upward trend will continue for Boulder (blue line), and Schriever AFB (red line).<\/p>\n<p>As the day wears on and the temperature rises, instability will rise, as well. Due to weak upper-level flow, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>wind shear<\/span> will not be great this afternoon, but will be sufficient for clusters of strong-to-severe storms along\/south of I-70 and along\/east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. These storms will be capable of small hail, gusty winds, and brief moderate-to-heavy rainfall. With this setup in place, there is some concern of slow-moving\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;training&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Continuous or repeated rainfall over the same region&nbsp;in a relatively short time span. Training thunderstorms can produce very high rainfall totals and cause flash flooding.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>training<\/span> thunderstorms, mainly over the Front Range, Urban Corridor and Palmer Ridge. With this in mind, a moderate flood threat is warranted where local enhancement of rainfall plus impervious surfaces provide additional concerns. For areas north of I-70 and along\/east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms are expected, but will not have the same gusto as those to the south. The main threats from these storms will be brief moderate-to-heavy rainfall, small hail, and gusty winds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IPW_20160606.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-2656 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IPW_20160606.png\" alt=\"IPW_20160606\" width=\"546\" height=\"243\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moving west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms are expected over the higher terrain as daytime heating works on enough moisture still clinging to the area. A few will drift over the valleys. The primary threats from these storms will be gusty winds and small hail, with brief light-to-moderate rainfall. A few strong-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> clusters are possible, mainly along\/south of I-70.
