Ejecting from the upper-level <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> is a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> disturbance, which will move across Colorado later today. The placement of the surface low pressure center is important, as it will help to transport moisture westward into northeastern Colorado, while bringing downlope conditions and drying to much of southeastern Colorado. A <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Denver Cyclone&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A subset of the Denver Convergence Vorticity Zone (DCVZ) in which the feature takes on a low-level cyclonic circulation, rather than an elongated area of convergent winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Denver Cyclone<\/span> will also be in play today, providing an additional focus for thunderstorm development.<\/p>\n<p>All of the ingredients mentioned above will combine to create the strong-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> risk for portions of eastern Colorado. The regions with the highest relative risk of seeing the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms will be the Front Range, Urban Corridor and Northeast Plains where the moisture\/instability will be best. IPW values remain around average for this time of year (see IPW chart below), which will help mitigate the potential flood threat. However, with strong instability and dewpoints in the 40s and 50s, moderate-to-heavy rainfall will attend the strongest storms.<\/p>\n<p>Further to the south across the Palmer Ridge and Southeast Plains (north of Highway 50), slightly drier air will hinder thunderstorm chances, but one or two <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> storms cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, the area will remain mostly sunny and warm, with generally breezy conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IPW_20160524.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-2461 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IPW_20160524.png\" alt=\"IPW_20160524\" width=\"561\" height=\"256\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the rest of the state, today will be marked by sunshine and warmth, with high temperatures reaching to normal for this time of year. A few fair weather cumulus clouds will dot the higher terrain this afternoon, attended by a few streaks of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface. Virga can cause strong, but short-lived, localized winds (dry microburst).&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>virga<\/span> over the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. A sprinkle or two may make its way to the surface over the higher terrain of the Northern and Central Mountains regions, but that will be about all the atmosphere can muster. A few will become severe. The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds, along with a couple tornadoes. Moderate-to-heavy rain will attend the stronger storms, with maximum rain rates as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Front Range: 0.8-1.2 inches\/hour<br>\nUrban Corridor and Northeast Plains: 1.8-2.2 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Storm motions will help mitigate the flood threat somewhat, but a low flood threat is warranted. Street and field ponding will be the main threats, especially combined with hail and locations with poor drainage.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Noon &ndash; 8 PM over the Urban Corridor and Front Range, 2 PM &ndash; Midnight over the Northeast Plains<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Palmer Ridge, and Southeast Plains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The threat for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorms is more conditional over these locations, with more needing to go right to get thunderstorms to develop. The better moisture and instability lies to the north of the area, but the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> will likely pass just near enough to kick off a thunderstorm or two (along and north of Highway 50). The main threat from any thunderstorm development will be damaging winds and hail (up to 1.25 inches in diameter). Brief moderate rainfall to the tune of 0.4-0.8 inches\/hour will be possible. Otherwise, the day will be mostly sunny and breezy.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 2 PM &ndash; 7 PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains, Central Mountains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Mostly sunny with high temperatures near seasonal average will be the main weather story today. Afternoon cumulus clouds will develop over the higher terrain, producing mainly <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface.
