Two distinct upper-level low circulations are noted in the water vapor imagery (red &ldquo;L), along with their expected movement today (red arrows). The placement of the circulations will continue to stream moisture (green arrow) from the south\/southwest, keeping <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> values above average for the date. Additionally, diffluent flow\/<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;divergence&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This term is often used in place of &amp;quot;divergent winds&rdquo; in our discussion. When divergence occurs aloft, it promotes upward motion and increases the potential for thunderstorm development.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>divergence<\/span> aloft will provide broad scale support for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms, mainly over the High Country and the adjacent valleys. Thunderstorms will be capable of brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds, as well as heavy snowfall above 10,000 feet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/WV_20160517.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-2396 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/WV_20160517.png\" alt=\"WV_20160517\" width=\"529\" height=\"397\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upslope flow over eastern Colorado will keep <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> shower chances in place for the plains regions, with slightly more coverage over and near the foothills\/Urban Corridor. Not much in the way of heavy rain is expected for areas east of the mountains as the atmosphere will simply be too <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;stable&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the atmosphere is considered stable if it resists air attempting to rise; the opposite of unstable&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>stable<\/span>. Due to this, the best coverage of showers will be for areas adjacent\/near the higher terrain.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Current &ndash; 9 PM, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> showers lingering into tomorrow morning<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Northern Mountains, Central Mountains, Southeast Mountains and San Luis Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers and weak thunderstorms expected today, resulting in mainly light rain and gusty winds. Maximum rain rates will vary:<\/p>\n<p>Front Range and Southeast Mountains: 0.2-0.4 inches\/hour<br>\nNorthern Mountains and Central Mountains: 0.4-0.7 inches\/hour<br>\nSan Luis Valley: 0.5-0.8 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 11 AM &ndash; 8 PM, with a few lingering showers into the early morning hours<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northwest Slope, Grand Valley, Southwest Slope, and San Juan Mountains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers and embedded thunderstorms expected. Rainfall from showers will be light, but thunderstorms will have the potential to produce brief, heavy rainfall at 1.0-1.4 inches\/hour. The low-end low flood threat has been issued as a result of the potential for brief heavy rain to fall on top of saturated soil. The main concerns will be low-lying areas along streams\/rivers and street ponding in poorly drained areas. Snow will fall above 10,000 feet, and may be heavy at times. Travel on mountain passes will see minimal impact, however, as roads will still be warm enough to melt the snow.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> showers are ongoing, coverage of both showers and thunderstorms will increase through the afternoon\/early evening.
