As the High shifts northeastward today, upper-level flow is expected to shift with it and clockwise motion around the High will continue. Dry air continues to advect into eastern Colorado, while moisture over far western Colorado shows a marked increase compared to yesterday. Grand Junction&rsquo;s morning <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> measurement of 1.02 inches reflects this increase, however <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dewpoint depressions&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Measures the difference between the temperature and dewpoint temperature at a given location. Typically, used in the context of measuring evaporative potential underneath a thunderstorm. A large dewpoint depressions implies lower rainfall intensity due to evaporative losses.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dewpoint depressions<\/span> are quite high, indicating more limited surface moisture.<\/p>\n<p>A subtle change in today&rsquo;s forecast as compared to yesterday is the increase in instability that is forecast for western Colorado, with values between 800-1300 J\/kg of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Higher values indicate a greater potential for stronger updrafts, thus an increase in the potential for thunderstorms and severe weather.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CAPE<\/span> possible. However, given that storms are already beginning to develop over the mountains, earlier rainfall may limit some of these higher <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Higher values indicate a greater potential for stronger updrafts, thus an increase in the potential for thunderstorms and severe weather.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CAPE<\/span> values from being realized. Still, a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> disturbance over northern New Mexico, marked by the &ldquo;X&rdquo; in the visible satellite image below, should move over southwest Colorado and help drive <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> storm development this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, these storms should develop over the higher terrain in southwest Colorado before spreading northwestward over west and northwest Colorado by evening. Given the relatively dry <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;boundary layer&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style=&amp;quot;color: #ffffff;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;The lower portion of the atmosphere that is directly influenced by the earth&amp;#039;s surface. Primarily, the boundary layer is driven by solar heating during the day and radiational cooling at night.&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>boundary layer<\/span>, storms today should produce most of their accumulation over the high terrain with an increasing threat for strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds as they move into the valleys. Several rounds storms are anticipated through the late evening. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> max 30-minute rain rates up to 0.8 inches are possible with storm cores that are able to briefly anchor to the higher terrains.
