By late morning <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers developed over the Northeast Plains and Palmer Ridge along a weak frontal boundary dipping into the state from the northeast to southwest. In the afternoon, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widely scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;10-25% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widely scattered<\/span> storms began firing up in the high elevations of the Front Range, Central and San Juan Mountains, Raton Ridge, and Southeast Plains; <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> storms also developed in the Southwest Slope. These storms quickly increased in coverage and intensity, spilling onto the Southeast Plains and tapping into moisture funneling in from southwest along the stalled frontal boundary draped across the southeast quadrant of state. In the evening, strong thunderstorms developed along the Front Range, Urban Corridor, Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge, and Southeast Plains. General drying occurred from north to south as storms began to taper off overnight for the Urban Corridor. Showers and thunderstorms remained overnight for the Palmer Ridge and Southeast Plains. Lingering moisture overnight and this morning resulted in many waking up to dense fog across the Eastern Plains.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 27 flood warnings or advisories were issued across the state yesterday and wide swaths of heavy rain was reported from Fort Collins to Walsenburg and Pueblo to Kit Carson! In addition to the many flood warnings, several <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> and tornado warnings were issued for the Eastern Plains. Torrential rainfall also occurred with the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span>, making them particularly dangerous with a combination of high winds, large hail, heavy rain, and several reported funnel clouds.<\/p>\n<p>The Cameron Peak and Spring Creek burn scars were the two scars most threatened by heavy rain yesterday and both were issued <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flood&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flood<\/span> warnings for all or portions of each scar. Thankfully no flooding was reported on either of these scars, though there were still plenty of flood reports across Central and Southern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> La Plata county, a &ldquo;mudslide occurred north of the Vallecito Marina and Yacht Club<\/strong> as a result of heavy rain from thunderstorms&rdquo;. The Vallecito Reservoir and Vallecito Creek MesoWest gauges only reported 0.01 and 0.06 inches of rain, respectively, but <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> observers in Bayfield (south of the reservoir) reported between 0.32-0.48 inches of precipitation yesterday, and the Durango area received up to 0.70 inches of rain. A bit further west in <strong>Cortez, up to 0.87 inches was reported along with &ldquo;minor flooding on local fields and ditches&rdquo;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Alamosa, a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> observer reported 0.70 inches of rain from a &ldquo;heavy thunderstorm&rdquo; that caused street and parking lots to flood.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Poncha Pass in the Central Mountains, a &ldquo;boulder the size of an engine&rdquo; was reported to have fallen on Highway 285<\/strong>. Nearby rainfall reports are modest, ranging from only 0.09-0.13 inches. However, 72-hour <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;QPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Q&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;uantitative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;P&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;recipitation &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;stimate; an estimate of the amount of precipitation that has fallen at a particular location or across a region based on several different data sources, such as radar or satellite; QPE is often calculated using remotely-sensed data sources&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>QPE<\/span> for this area suggests up to 0.50-1.00 inches of rain have fallen in this area in the last few days.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Walsenburg, Huerfano County Road 340 was reported flooded by law enforcement<\/strong>. Impressive rainfall totals of 1.75 inches and 2.20 inches were reported in or near Walsenburg and Lathrop State Park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multiple flood reports were made across the Denver Metro Area and Urban Corridor<\/strong> last night, including:<\/p>\n<ul><li>Street flooding at Colfax Ave and Monaco Parkway from hail covering street drainage. There were reports of up to 6 inches of water running across the road and 0.75 inch hail stones<\/li>\n<li>Multiple roads flooded in City Park area east of Denver<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/denverite.com\/2022\/08\/08\/cdot-says-itll-get-to-the-bottom-of-why-i-70-flooded-stranding-motorists\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=lookout&amp;utm_campaign=lookout20220808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newly constructed portion of I-70<\/a> was closed between York St. and Brighton Blvd. due to floodwaters, stranding several vehicles and prompting rescue from Denver Fire (tweet below)<\/li>\n<li>Reports of nuisance flooding and water ponding on roads in Thornton, Westminster, Aurora, and Commerce City<\/li>\n<\/ul><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Floodwater blocking I-70 between York and Brighton! A MHFD gauge at Niver Detention Pond in Thornton (below) picked up 2.05 inches yesterday, with over 1.75 of that falling in a single hour. The 25-year, 1-hour <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;ARI&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;verage &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;R&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ecurrence &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;I&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;nterval; the average or expected length of time between the exceedance of a given rainfall threshold; average recurrence interval = 1\/(annual exceedance probability)&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>ARI<\/span> precipitation in Thornton is 1.77 inches &ndash; so this storm was just below a 25-year <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;ARI&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;verage &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;R&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ecurrence &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;I&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;nterval; the average or expected length of time between the exceedance of a given rainfall threshold; average recurrence interval = 1\/(annual exceedance probability)&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>ARI<\/span>. In other words, there was just a 4% chance of a storm of this magnitude occurring in any given year!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/NiverDententionPond.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-18960 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/NiverDententionPond.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/NiverDententionPond.jpg 518w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/NiverDententionPond-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/NiverDententionPond-170x90.jpg 170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Across the Urban Corridor rainfall totals vary wildly, with some locations picking up impressive totals and others completely missed. A <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> observer in Penrose reported 1.95 inches of rain yesterday, and the Freemont County Airport reported 1.42 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, heavy rain caused <strong>multiple flooded roadways across the northern and western portions of Pueblo West<\/strong>, stranding at least one vehicle. There was also a &ldquo;100-foot wide channel of flowing water through properties &ndash; at least several inches deep&rdquo; reported.
