It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> at Platteville was measured at 1.25 inches, which is quite high and about a quarter of an inch jump from yesterday. Back over western Colorado, <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> at Grand Junction was measured at 0.85 inches with values increasing to an inch across the southern border. A quick way to sum up the moisture content &ndash; the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> moisture plume remains overhead. While the majority of the lift will remain west and north of the state today with the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span>, there was a small <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> noted in New Mexico (orange &ldquo;X&rdquo;), which is expected to move northwards. With southwest steering flows around the High, spillover of thunderstorms into the adjacent eastern plains is anticipated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18920\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806-1024x791.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wv_20220806.jpg 1240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There will be a couple of areas to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Watch&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a weather watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific weather event to occur&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>watch<\/span> for the flood threat today. Over the mountains, portions of the Front Range, Southeast Mountains and San Juan Mountains may see <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>, heavy rainfall from a couple thunderstorms that develop. If storms (south) track over areas that have saturated soils, there is an increased likelihood for a mud flow, debris slide or excessive runoff. A LOW flood threat has been issued. Over the adjacent plains, enhanced convergence is forecast over the Palmer Ridge, an area with high atmospheric moisture content. So, upscale growth of storms are anticipated in this area with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span> likely initiating additional storm develop. A MODERATE flood threat has been issued with a LOW threat issued for the Raton Ridge. Stronger storms over these areas may generate road flooding, field ponding and flooding of low-lying areas. Initially some storms may pose a small hail threat with wind becoming that dominate threat later this evening. Upscale growth of storms is anticipated and could cause more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> heavy rainfall over the Palmer Ridge, so a MODERATE flood threat has been issued. Max 30-minute rain rates up to 2 inches and 1-hour rain rates up to 3 inches will be possible. This could cause road flooding, field ponding and flooding of low-lying areas. Rainfall may linger overnight, but the flood threat should end a few hours after sundown. Tomorrow morning expect cloudy and cool conditions behind the passage of a cold front.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 3PM to 2AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Southeast Mountains, Front Range, Raton Ridge &amp; Urban Corridor: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Storms are expected to be more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> today, especially north with some mid-level drying and heating. Over this area, max 30-minute rain rates up to 1.25 inches will be possible for the stronger storms that can develop. Further south, max 30-minute rain rates up to 1.5 inches (mountains) and 2.25 inches (adjacent plains) will be possible. Over steeper terrains mud flow and debris slides will be possible, and excessive runoff may also cause road flooding, field ponding and rises on local streams\/creeks. Storms may linger overnight further south with weak mid-level lift and moisture over the area. A LOW flood threat has been issued.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 12:30PM to 2AM<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Luis Valley, Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains &amp; Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Little to no precipitation is forecast over the central\/northern portions of these zones with drier air over the area moving in with a small <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;jet streak&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The region of a jet stream with the strongest winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>jet streak<\/span>. Further south, moisture should be able to hang on and a couple stronger storms may develop capable of producing heavy rainfall. This could be problematic if they track over saturated soils. For reference, Lily Pond SNOTEL soils are about 65% saturated. Max 30-minute rain rates up to 1.2 inches and 1-hour rain rates up to 1.4 inches will be possible. A LOW flood threat has been issued.
