While the pattern seems similar from the big picture, on a local level, we continue to look closely at slight changes in moisture, cloud cover and steering flow to understand the flood threat. This morning, Grand Junction&rsquo;s <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> measured 1.02 inches, a slight increase from yesterday&rsquo;s 0.96 inches and well above the seasonal normal of 0.75 &ndash; 0.8 inches. Dewpoint temperatures are also 3-8F higher over north-central and northwest Colorado suggesting the continued potential for heavy rainfall there. With instability up to 1,000 J\/kg <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Higher values indicate a greater potential for stronger updrafts, thus an increase in the potential for thunderstorms and severe weather.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CAPE<\/span> expected again this afternoon, a LOW flood threat is warranted for portions of the Central and Northern Mountains as well as the Front Range along the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> maximum 30-60 minute rain rates are expected to exceed <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flood&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flood<\/span> guidance over this steeper terrain. The main caveat today is the presence of cloud cover and ongoing light showers\/sprinkles associated with a weak mid-level disturbance (see &ldquo;X&rdquo; in the satellite image below). This is expected to limit instability over the Northwest Slope and parts of the Northern Mountains, keeping moderate\/heavy rain rates limited to the 15-30 minute duration that is unlikely to produce flooding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vis_markup-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-18382 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vis_markup-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vis_markup-2.png 676w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vis_markup-2-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Further east, the moisture profile is not as threatening with more dry air expected in the sub-cloud layer reducing the max rain rates and promoting the threat of gusty winds. To the south, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;wind shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>wind shear<\/span> will be so weak that storm updrafts are unlikely to sustain themselves long enough to produce a flood threat.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, over southeastern and eastern Colorado, very hot temperatures are expected once again as little cloud cover is anticipated.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today&rsquo;s Flood Threat Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information on today&rsquo;s flood threat, see the map below. Highest coverage will be closer to the mountains and over the Northeast Plains, with little activity expected further southeast over the plains. Max 30-minute rain rates up to 0.7 inches are possible with max 1-hour rainfall up to 1.5 inches over parts of the Northeast Plains. Some nuisance ponding of rain water could occur, but flooding is NOT expected today.
