Typical diurnal thunderstorm development in the mountains occurred by early afternoon, while a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> traversing the state on increasingly northerly flow aloft expanded shower and storm coverage by mid-afternoon into the foothills and eventually the eastern Plains. Lee cyclogenesis and a surface high to our east provided moisture return and upslope flow near the surface, further aiding convective development. Sufficient <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span> (around 30 knots) allowed enough storm organization to lead to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>numerous<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Severe Thunderstorm<\/span> Warnings, with hail and heavy rain the primary threats.<\/p>\n<p>The heaviest rain occurred across the Northeast Plains along and southeast of the I-76 corridor, where amounts up to 1-2&rdquo; were observed. Gauge observations are sparse, but <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> observers reported 0.89&rdquo; and 0.60&rdquo; near Woodrow and Flagler, respectively. 1-1.5&rdquo; hail was also reported in this region. The Southeast Mountains and Raton Ridge also saw heavy rainfall, with amounts of 0.5-1.5&rdquo;. The Southwest Slope observed up to 1&rdquo; of rainfall, with an automated station near Towaoc measuring 0.89&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flood&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Flash Flood<\/span> Warnings were issued for south-central Chaffee County and once again the Spring Creek burn scar, with no flooding reported. Two Flood Advisories were issued for portions of the Southwest Slope, and another Flood Advisory was issued for southeastern portions of the Cameron Peak burn scar, but no flooding was reported at any of these locations.<\/p>\n<p>On the interesting side of yesterday&rsquo;s weather, a heat burst was recorded near Wray:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ongoing heat burst in Wray, CO this evening (Tuesday July 12, 2022).
