Moisture was on the increase yesterday across the lower elevations while the influx of monsoonal moisture continued aloft, providing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> values 150-200% of normal. An early morning disturbance moved north of the state while subsidence in its wake scoured out low clouds, allowing plentiful sunshine and the erosion of convective inhibition (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CIN&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective INhibition) This is the amount of energy needed to initiate convection and is related to the term &amp;quot;cap&rdquo;. The stronger the cap or higher the CIN, the harder it is for convection to initiate. If the CIN value is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CIN<\/span>) by noon. With plentiful moisture and no <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span>, an upper-level <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> and upslope surface flow combined to trigger <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> storms in the mountains\/over the Palmer Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Storms at first struggled to move off the high terrain, but soon became organized into supercells\/multi-cell clusters (thanks to ample <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span>) and moved out into the Plains, where they produced heavy rain, severe winds, hail, and a few tornadoes. By late evening, the storms grew upscale into a line while departing the state to the east.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;WFOs&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;W&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;eather &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;F&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;orecast &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;O&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ffice; the National Weather Service operates 122 WFOs across the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>WFOs<\/span> issued a plethora of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Severe Thunderstorm<\/span> Warnings and Tornado Warnings, most notably across the eastern half of the state. Two tornadoes were reported: one tornado along U.S. Highway 50 near the Bent\/Otero County line, and another tornado east of Fort Morgan with reports of tree damage and downed power lines. Portions of the Front Range saw up to 1.5&rdquo; of rain, while amounts up to 0.5&rdquo; (including near the mudslide west of Telluride) were <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widely scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;10-25% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widely scattered<\/span> across the western half of the state. The heaviest rain fell in two general locations: Weld\/Morgan Counties, were 2.5-3.5&rdquo; of rain was observed, and Kit Carson\/Cheyenne Counties south of I-70, where 3-4&rdquo; of rain was observed!<\/p>\n<p>Some impressive rainfall totals across the Plains include:<br>\n&bull; 3.79&rdquo; in Rocky Ford<br>\n&bull; 3.25&rdquo; in Cheyenne Wells<br>\n&bull; 3.22&rdquo; in Pawnee National Grasslands<br>\n&bull; 2.54&rdquo; 2.9 miles ESE of Rocky Ford<br>\n&bull; 2.29&rdquo; 5 miles SSE of Brush<\/p>\n<p>Some impressive rainfall totals at high elevations in the mountains include:<br>\n&bull; 2.06&rdquo; 6.6 miles WNW of Arvada<br>\n&bull; 1.35&rdquo; at Georgetown Lake<br>\n&bull; 1.22&rdquo; 6.2 miles N of Black Hawk<br>\n&bull; 1.20&rdquo; in Nederland<\/p>\n<p>The station in Rocky Ford measured <strong>3.36&rdquo; of its 24-hour total in just one hour<\/strong>! This extreme rainfall rate has an estimated <strong><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;ARI&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;verage &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;R&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ecurrence &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;I&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;nterval; the average or expected length of time between the exceedance of a given rainfall threshold; average recurrence interval = 1\/(annual exceedance probability)&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>ARI<\/span> of over 350 years<\/strong>, per NOAA Atlas 14 data!<\/p>\n<p>If you observe flooding in your area, remember to use the &ldquo;Report a Flood&rdquo; page to make any flood reports when you can safely do so.
