{"id":1817,"date":"2015-08-30T09:30:06","date_gmt":"2015-08-30T15:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=1817"},"modified":"2015-08-31T06:39:22","modified_gmt":"2015-08-31T12:39:22","slug":"ftb-08-30-2015-approaching-trough-over-pacific-nw-brings-changes-to-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=1817","title":{"rendered":"FTB 08-30-2015: Approaching Trough Over Pacific NW Brings Changes to Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 8\/30\/2015<br>\nIssue Time: 9:20 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE GRAND VALLEY, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, CENTRAL MOUNTAIN, AND SAN JUAN MOUNTAIN REGIONS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ridge of high pressure (blue &ldquo;H&rdquo; and dashed line) that has been overhead the past few days will be nudged eastward today by the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> (red &ldquo;L&rdquo; and dashed line) over the Northwest US as it moves over the Northern Rockies. As a result, southwesterly flow will increase over western Colorado through today\/tonight, bringing increasing moisture to the area (green arrow). With the influx in moisture, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> values will climb, reaching above 1 inch across the San Juan Mountains, Southwest Slope, and Grand Valley regions, thus the low flood threat in those areas. With that said, all regions across the High Country will see an uptick in thunderstorm coverage today; the main threats will be gusty <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds, lightning, and brief moderate-to-heavy rainfall. Rain rates and timing will be broken down in the Zone-Specific discussions below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/08302015_WV.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-1818 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/08302015_WV.png\" alt=\"08302015_WV\" width=\"524\" height=\"389\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>East of the mountains, another hot and mostly sunny afternoon is in store, with temperatures increasing\/clouds decreasing from west to east. Adjacent to the mountains, mid- and high-level clouds will increase through the afternoon as thunderstorms build over the mountains. A few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorms will attempt to move overhead, but dry air in the low-levels will mean strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds are the main threat. Gusts to 45-50 mph are not out of the question, accompanied by <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface. Virga can cause strong, but short-lived, localized winds (dry microburst).&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>virga<\/span>\/light rainfall.
