{"id":1781,"date":"2015-08-26T09:22:28","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T15:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2015-08-27T06:49:22","modified_gmt":"2015-08-27T12:49:22","slug":"ftb-08-26-2015-monsoon-disturbance-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=1781","title":{"rendered":"FTB 08-26-2015: Monsoon Disturbance On the Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 8\/26\/2015<br>\nIssue Time: 9:10 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, GRAND VALLEY, NORTHWEST SLOPE, AND NORTHERN MOUNTAINS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, GRAND VALLEY, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, FRONT RANGE, NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, AND NORTHWEST SLOPE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An increase in shower\/thunderstorm coverage today is expected over the mountains as a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> disturbance rotates across Colorado from the west\/southwest. Ahead of this disturbance, moisture has increased fairly significantly over western Colorado, with IPW readings greater than 1 inch at Grand Junction. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Widespread<\/span> showers and thunderstorms are expected over the High Country and adjacent low valleys, with areas east of the mountains looking to remain mainly dry and hot today.<\/p>\n<p>With the increase in moisture and support from the monsoonal disturbance, showers and thunderstorms will produce rainfall fairly efficiently today, resulting in locally moderate-to-heavy rainfall. Instability will not be great due to extensive cloud cover and storm motions will be decent; both of which will help to limit the flood threat somewhat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/WV_08262015.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-1780 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/WV_08262015.png\" alt=\"WV_08262015\" width=\"460\" height=\"343\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along the Urban Corridor, as well as western portions of the Northeast Plains, Southeast Plains, Raton Ridge, and Palmer Ridge, gusty <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds from mountain <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span> will be the main impact today, but a very low chance of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorms will exist during the afternoon and evening hours. Brief, localized, moderate rainfall is possible, with rain rates breaking down like this:<\/p>\n<p>Front Range: 0.5-1.0 inches\/hour<br>\nSoutheast Mountains: 0.3-0.6 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Noon &ndash; 10 PM, with a few showers\/weak thunderstorms lingering into the early morning hours tomorrow<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains, Southeast Plains, Palmer Ridge, and Raton Ridge:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Aside from low chances of an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> storm or two across the Urban Corridor, and western portions of the other regions, these zones will stay mostly sunny and hot today. The mixing out of moisture will keep rain rates low, with maximum rates of 0.25-0.6 inches\/hour from any thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 2 PM &ndash; 8 PM, with a shower\/weak thunderstorm or two during the early morning hours as the disturbance rotates across eastern Colorado.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Central Mountains, Grand Valley, San Luis Valley, San Juan Mountains, and Southwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Widespread<\/span> showers and thunderstorms expected today and tonight, with locally heavy rainfall possible. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Widespread<\/span> cloud cover will keep temperatures much cooler than yesterday. Maximum rain rates will be 1.0-1.5 inches\/hour, 1.8-2.2 inches\/3 hours. The best chances of realizing these rates will be over the San Juan Mountains, Southwest Slope, Grand Valley, Northwest Slope, and Northern Mountains regions.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 11 AM &ndash; 11 PM will be the prime time, but <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers\/thunderstorms will continue into tomorrow morning.
