After moving east off the mountains, storms were able to tap into a bit of additional available moisture and fill in, developing into more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> convective cells, especially on the Palmer and Raton Ridges and Eastern Plains.<\/p>\n<p>Two <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> warnings were issued yesterday for both the very northeast and southeast corners of the state, though the main threats were high winds and damaging hail versus heavy rain. A trained spotter reported a weak landspout tornado southeast of Iliff in the Northeast Plains, and several 50-60 mph wind gusts were reported northeast of Sterling near the Wyoming and Nebraska borders. A <strong><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> observer in Iliff also reported 0.34 inches of rain<\/strong> yesterday associated with the storms. On the Southeast Plains, the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorm<\/span> near Walsh produced 65 mph wind gusts and pea-sized hail. The cell also went over the CoAgMet station in Walsh, which picked up the highest precipitation across Colorado yesterday, a <strong>quick 0.37 between 9 and 11 pm<\/strong>, as seen in the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;hyetograph&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;a graph depicting rainfall intensity over time&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>hyetograph<\/span> below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/walsh_20220517.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16859 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/walsh_20220517.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/walsh_20220517.png 600w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/walsh_20220517-300x135.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Western Colorado remained largely dry yesterday, with a few non-thunderstorm high wind reports, including a 46 mph gust on Douglas Pass &ndash; which has seen some impressive gusts so far this year. The High Park Fire also continued to grow; it is now at 1572 acres with 37% containment. What little rain fell over the fire yesterday was not sufficient to increase any moisture in burning fuels, and gusty <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds from storms caused erratic fire behavior.<\/p>\n<p>There were no flood reports yesterday.
