Very often, only one is present (today, it is dynamics), but in sufficient strength, one can overcome the other&rsquo;s absence. Such is the case today. As shown in the visible satellite image below, a strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave trough<\/span> has begun to move into Colorado from the west. In response, a surface low pressure will be developing along the NM\/CO border today, responsible for very breezy conditions over the lower elevations of eastern Colorado today. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) at Grand Junction has increased to 0.89 inches this morning, while Denver is steady at 0.67 inches. However, <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> is expected to slightly increase today, especially over eastern Colorado. Additionally, the moisture profile has changed to a moister <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;boundary layer&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style=&amp;quot;color: #ffffff;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;The lower portion of the atmosphere that is directly influenced by the earth&amp;#039;s surface. Primarily, the boundary layer is driven by solar heating during the day and radiational cooling at night.&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>boundary layer<\/span> over the past 24 hours. This increases chances for moderate to heavy rainfall, especially east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. The aforementioned surface low pressure will maintain a strong upslope flow east of I-25 over northeast Colorado. With plenty of morning breaks in the cloud cover, there should be enough sunshine to boost instability into the 800-1,000 J\/kg range this afternoon. With the stronger dynamics, organization of storms will be likely today, which could lead to prolonged heavy rainfall at a given location. In all, there will be a ~3-5 hour window this afternoon and early evening where heavy rainfall could occur over the Palmer Ridge and surrounding area. Outside of fire burn areas, we do not expect flooding for western Colorado today. Over the Palmer Ridge, max 30-minute rainfall up to 0.8 inches with max 1-hour rainfall up to 1.2 inches possible, and a LOW flood threat has been posted. For other regions, max 1-hour rainfall up to 0.8 inches possible. Hail up to 0.75 inches will be possible with the strongest cells this afternoon<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 2PM through 10PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Front Range, Central Mountains, Grand Valley, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley and Southeast Mountains: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Mostly cloudy with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>numerous<\/span> showers and weaker storms ongoing throughout the day, then diminishing during the late evening.
