This morning&rsquo;s visible satellite image, below, shows a distinct cut-off circulation over western New Mexico responsible for ongoing showers and weak thunderstorms over a large swath of the Four Corners region. The low has moved slowly eastward since yesterday morning, has deepened a bit and will continue to do so as it begins to feel the synoptic scale lift from a strong incoming <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> further to the northwest. Notably colder temperatures aloft have now moved into New Mexico and will enter southwest Colorado today. Yesterday&rsquo;s <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;QPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Q&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;uantitative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;P&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;recipitation &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;stimate; an estimate of the amount of precipitation that has fallen at a particular location or across a region based on several different data sources, such as radar or satellite; QPE is often calculated using remotely-sensed data sources&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>QPE<\/span> up to 0.50-0.75 inches over the San Juan Mountains carried max hourly rain rates of up to a rather impressive 0.5 inches with very limited instability and moisture. In addition, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> heavy rainfall, near 1.5 inch\/hour, was observed over central AZ higher terrain yesterday. Thus, we expect that today&rsquo;s rainfall intensity will very likely be higher over southwest Colorado. This morning&rsquo;s <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) was 0.61 inches at Grand Junction and 0.48 at Denver. A <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> of 0.78 inches was measured at both Albuquerque and Flagstaff, and <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;boundary layer&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style=&amp;quot;color: #ffffff;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;The lower portion of the atmosphere that is directly influenced by the earth&amp;#039;s surface. Primarily, the boundary layer is driven by solar heating during the day and radiational cooling at night.&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>boundary layer<\/span> moisture <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;advection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The process of transport of an atmospheric property, typically temperature or moisture in our FTB discussions, by the wind. &amp;quot;Strong&rdquo; or &amp;quot;weak&rdquo; advection refers to the rate of change of the advected property&amp;#039;s value at a given point.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>advection<\/span> will be from the southwest today. Thus, we expect <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> up to 0.7-0.85 in the far southwestern portion of the state. With the aforementioned cooling aloft, instability up to 1,000 J\/kg will be possible this afternoon especially over areas that see some breaks in cloud cover as is expected. Steering winds will be modest, in the 20-25mph range and will be pushing storms towards the west.<\/p>\n<p>Translating everything into sensible weather, with the strengthening <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cut-off low&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;an upper-level low pressure system that has been &amp;quot;cut off&rdquo; from the prevailing winds that steer weather systems; cut-off lows typically become stationary or move very slowly, bringing prolonged periods of unsettled weather&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cut-off low<\/span>, we expect several rounds of showers and thunderstorms over southwest Colorado today. During the afternoon and early evening, there will be a chance for heavy rainfall over the San Juan Mountains roughly south of a South Fork-Silverton line.
