This is looking significantly more likely now, and a welcomed prolonged period of above normal precipitation should provide many with some beneficial moisture (Event #1). However, this is jumping to conclusions, so let&rsquo;s discuss how this could arise.<\/p>\n<p>As shown in the water vapor image, below, a highly amplified <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;jet stream&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Relatively strong winds concentrated within a narrow stream in the atmosphere. General weather patterns are related closely to the position, strength and orientation of the jet stream.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>jet stream<\/span> is noted this morning across the central\/eastern Pacific as well as North America. As described in this morning&rsquo;s FTB, the current strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> overhead will significantly cool off the entire state. However, this is a transient feature that will quickly move east and be replaced by a ridge. The primary end-product of this will be a return to much above normal temperatures. In fact, above normal temperatures, to the tune of 5-10F, are essentially expected through the rest of this Outlook as the aforementioned ridge moves eastward and parks itself over the central United States. At the same time, a strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> will develop off the western North American coast resulting in southwesterly steering flow over Colorado. Interestingly, the eastern subtropical Pacific has moistened up a bit, after being very dry in the past 2 weeks or so. Thus, after a very dry week this week, moisture will return to Colorado, and likely stick around for awhile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_markup-7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-16198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_markup-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_markup-7.png 884w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_markup-7-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_markup-7-768x527.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As shown in the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) plumes, below, moisture will nosedive to below seasonal average statewide, but especially over the Western Slope. Coupled with increasingly higher temperatures this week, there could be a day or two with a wildfire threat. However, currently this looks to be mitigated by rather weak <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;boundary layer&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style=&amp;quot;color: #ffffff;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;The lower portion of the atmosphere that is directly influenced by the earth&amp;#039;s surface. Primarily, the boundary layer is driven by solar heating during the day and radiational cooling at night.&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>boundary layer<\/span> winds. By later this week, moisture increases to near seasonal normal, and then above seasonal normal over the weekend. Although a return to precipitation is looking likely, the nature of the precipitation is highly uncertain given that heavy rainfall is becoming quite unlikely from a climatological perspective. Factors that could produce a low-end Elevated flood threat for a day or two would be the existence of a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cut-off low&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;an upper-level low pressure system that has been &amp;quot;cut off&rdquo; from the prevailing winds that steer weather systems; cut-off lows typically become stationary or move very slowly, bringing prolonged periods of unsettled weather&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cut-off low<\/span> that is being forecasted by some guidance. However, for now, the more likely outcome is light to moderate precipitation, with at least some weaker thunderstorms expected especially earlier in Event #1. Thus, there is No Apparent Flood Threat at this time, although this could change in the upcoming Outlooks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16196 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1-1024x357.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"836\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1-1024x357.png 1024w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1-300x105.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1-768x268.png 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/gefs_pw-1.png 1351w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The identified precipitation event is described in more detail below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #1: Monday &ndash; Saturday (September 27 &ndash; October 2)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Precipitation To Return, But <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">No Apparent Flood Threat<\/span> At This Time <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> precipitation could return by next weekend, but guidance is currently suggesting that the best chances will arrive by Monday, 9\/27. At this time, it appears that the southwest quadrant of the state will see the best chances of precipitation exceeding 0.5 inches. However, with the likelihood of frontal passages, the entire state could see lighter precipitation up to 0.5 inches. The best chances of convective rainfall currently appear to be early in Event #1, from Monday through Wednesday when intensity exceeding 0.5 inches per hour could occur. Thereafter, cooler temperatures could reduce instability and favor more gentler precipitation rates, and higher elevation snowfall.
