As the day continues, the Low is forecast to be absorbed into the stronger southwest flow, which will bring enhanced mid and upper-level lift across the state. This will help create two distinct areas of precipitation over the state, one over western Colorado and the Southeast Mountains and the other over the eastern plains along a surface <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span>. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;downsloping&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to the winds that blow from higher elevations down towards lower elevations. As air parcels descend, they warm, which often results in rapid warming of areas near the higher terrains. It also promotes lower relative humidity values and stability, which prevents thunderstorm development.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Downsloping<\/span> flow from the lee <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> should help to keep precipitation chances fairly low&nbsp;across the Front Range and northern Urban Corridor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15862\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_20210901.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_20210901.png 1162w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_20210901-300x260.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_20210901-768x666.png 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wv_20210901-1024x888.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the location of the California Low has created southerly flow aloft, which has advected the plume of subtropical moisture more into western Colorado. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> at Grand Junction has risen to 1.13 inches, which is just a couple hundredths shy of the daily maximum value. The first batch of showers has already arrived to the northwest corner of the state, and throughout the day, showers and storms are expected to increase over all of western Colorado. With better moisture available within the surface layer today, rain rates and accumulations are expected to be higher than yesterday. One limiting factor to the flood threat will be the lack of daytime heating, which should decrease the chance for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> thunderstorm development. Another limiting factor will be faster southwest steering flows, which should limit the flood threat from any individual storm. However, continuous southwesterly flow and extra lifting dynamics are expected to help initiate multiple rounds of rainfall, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;training&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Continuous or repeated rainfall over the same region&nbsp;in a relatively short time span. Training thunderstorms can produce very high rainfall totals and cause flash flooding.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>training<\/span> storms and embedded <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span>. All of which will increase the flood threat, but over a longer duration than the typical 1 to 2 hour threat. A&nbsp;MODERATE flood threat has been issued, which continues into tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the east, <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> at Denver was measured at 0.73 inches, which is expected to increase throughout the day as the moisture plume moves east. A drier surface layer was noted in the sounding, which paired with the faster southwest steering flows, should help thunderstorm accumulations from reaching flood threat criteria over the eastern plains. With an increasing moisture gradient towards the southern border, it is possible that storms that develop over the Southeast Mountains, on southwest facing slopes, may produce some heavier rainfall, which could cause some local flooding issues. Expect this mornings storms to expand in coverage and intensity around noon. By morning, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> totals up to 3.50 inches may be possible with 3-hour rainfall rates reaching around 2 inches in the MODERATE flood threat area this afternoon\/evening. This could cause mud flows, debris slides and excessive runoff over steeper terrains, especially as soils become saturated in areas where <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;training&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Continuous or repeated rainfall over the same region&nbsp;in a relatively short time span. Training thunderstorms can produce very high rainfall totals and cause flash flooding.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>training<\/span> storms set up. Other flood threats include flooding of roads and low-lying areas. A couple stronger storms may develop south with the main threats being lightning and embedded <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. Back over the Southeast Mountains, accumulations will be slightly lower with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> storm totals up to 3 inches possible by morning.
