As we repeat many times within our discussions, our unique topography can drive its own atmospheric circulation that generates storms activity. The table below shows that, at this point, each of our six &ldquo;major&rdquo; burn scars that we track daily, has experienced flooding during 2021. Additionally, the ridge aloft that has been centered very close to Colorado in the recent days will re-emerge to the northeast\/east of us and strengthen. One important ramification of this will be an increase in temperatures especially east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> where <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;downsloping&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to the winds that blow from higher elevations down towards lower elevations. As air parcels descend, they warm, which often results in rapid warming of areas near the higher terrains. It also promotes lower relative humidity values and stability, which prevents thunderstorm development.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>downsloping<\/span> winds will produce 100F+ heat at lower elevations below 5,000 feet. However, the more relevant impact of such a ridge position will be to keep advecting fresh <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> moisture from its &ldquo;source&rdquo; region of the highlands of western Mexico and the Gulf of California.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15106 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-7.png 701w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-7-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The map below from the Climate Prediction Center shows the composite anomalous precipitation (% of normal) that occurred on the top 10 matching days with the upper-level ridge over the Central Plains, as is being forecasted. Interestingly, despite general below normal precipitation over the western United States, the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> region stands out quite drastically with a 70% or greater chance of seeing above normal precipitation. Keep in mind that this analysis relies on heavily smoothed precipitation grids, implying an even greater chance of seeing above normal precipitation over the preferred regions of the San Juans, Central and Northern Mountains over the next 10 days or so. Thereafter, uncertainty increases as guidance suggests the ridge will move closer to Colorado, which would tend to promote some drying. However, it remains to be seen whether this occurs, since it will take some time to scour out so much moisture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/CPC_610analog.prcp_.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15104 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/CPC_610analog.prcp_.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"609\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this Outlook, we have identified a single, but prolonged precipitation Event, described in more detail below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #1: Friday &ndash; Saturday (July 23 &ndash; July 31)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Persistent <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Elevated Flood Threat<\/span> For Higher Terrain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Although plenty of day-to-day variability is expected in terms of the exact positioning and peak intensity of heavy rainfall, we expect daily showers and thunderstorms to cover the high terrain over this period. In terms of rainfall intensity, 1 inch per hour or greater intensity appears very likely daily with even higher storm total amounts. However, during particularly active days, up to 2 inches per hour of rainfall could occur. The preferred areas will be entire higher terrain, with the exception of the Southeast Mountains that will be more susceptible to subsidence and intrusions of drier air from the east.<\/p>\n<p>In all, we expect that <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> locations in the higher terrain will experience at least 2 inches of rainfall over the course of this event, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> locations likely exceeding 3 inches. Even higher totals will be possible depending on the favorability of setups that cannot be determined with this kind of lead time. In terms of impacts, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>, mud flows and debris slides will be likely throughout the Event.
