Now just one month later, we are seeing a fortunate reversal of events, at least for Colorado, as above normal <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span> moisture is expected to hang around the state indefinitely. The maps below compare the ongoing &ldquo;Large Incidents&rdquo; wildfire activity from the US Forest Service with 30-day precipitation departures (% of normal). A strong correlation is seen across the western US with wildfires occurring where little to no precipitation has fallen since summer started. Some deviation is seen in central Arizona, but this is likely because most of the precipitation has occurred recently so wildfires have not been entirely suppressed yet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fires_precip.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14974 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fires_precip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"887\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fires_precip.png 955w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fires_precip-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fires_precip-768x398.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking at this morning&rsquo;s water vapor image, one will notice that we have not zoomed out as much as normal. This is because most of the important atmospheric features for this Outlook will be &ldquo;circling around&rdquo; the Four Corners for the next 10-15 days. The key feature to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Watch&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a weather watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific weather event to occur&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>watch<\/span> will be the placement and intensity of the so-called &ldquo;<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Monsoon<\/span> Ridge&rdquo;, which is currently in latency over southwest AZ. This feature will quickly intensify and move N\/NE to hold a position north of Colorado within 72 hours. Thereafter, this ridge is expected to maintain near-stationarity for the duration of this Outlook. With the position of the ridge to our north, this will allow for the transport of moisture and disturbances from the east, a fairly unusual occurrence for us. And with plenty of moisture available over NM and AZ to transport northward, we expect a rather active pattern for the daily occurrence of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> heavy rainfall mainly focused over the climatologically favored parts of western and southwestern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14977 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-5.png 856w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-5-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wv_markup-5-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As seen in the forecasted <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Precipitable Water<\/span> plumes for Denver and Grand Junction, above normal moisture will hang around most of the state over the next 72 hours. Thereafter, some drying will occur east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> as a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cut-off low&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;an upper-level low pressure system that has been &amp;quot;cut off&rdquo; from the prevailing winds that steer weather systems; cut-off lows typically become stationary or move very slowly, bringing prolonged periods of unsettled weather&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cut-off low<\/span> pressure is forecasted to move into the southern Great Plains. Subsidence and some dry air transport will reduce moisture over northeast Colorado. However, above normal moisture will persist west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>, especially over the southwest parts of the state leading to thunderstorm activity capable of generating heavy rainfall and flooding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-14975 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"867\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes.png 1531w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes-768x267.png 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/gefs_pw_plumes-1024x356.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this Outlook, we have identified two precipitation events, which are described in more detail below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #1: Friday &ndash; Sunday (July 16 &ndash; July 18)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Low-end <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Elevated Flood Threat<\/span> for eastern Plains as well as central and southern high terrain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There is significant uncertainty with this event, especially given the short lead time. However, the passage of a disturbance is expected to yield <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> to possibly <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;numerous&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;40-60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>numerous<\/span> shower and thunderstorms activity on Friday. Higher elevations of the Northern, Central and San Juan Mountains are expected to see <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> heavy rainfall up to 1.0 inch per hour. Farther east, there is an increasing likelihood of organized clusters of storms moving off the high terrain and into the lower elevations. Rain rates over the lower elevations are uncertain, but enough moisture is available to sustain 1.5 inches\/hour or more, which would support <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>. Severe weather, both strong winds and hail, are also possible with the stronger storms towards the NE and KS borders. By Saturday and Sunday, most activity over the Plains is expected to subside, but <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> storms should continue over the central and southern high terrain, capable of producing 1.0 inch per hour of rainfall.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15024\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/FTO_20210715_e1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/FTO_20210715_e1-1.png 1780w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/FTO_20210715_e1-1-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/FTO_20210715_e1-1-768x520.png 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/FTO_20210715_e1-1-1024x694.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #2: Monday &ndash; Monday (July 19 &ndash; July 26)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Persistent&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Elevated Flood Threat<\/span> over southwest Colorado<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>An increase in <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;monsoon&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;a seasonal wind that brings moisture and rain to the region into which it blows; there is also a dry phase to monsoons, but popular usage refers only to the wet phase; these winds occur in many places around the world, and where they occur they are responsible for a majority of that location&rsquo;s annual precipitation&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>monsoon<\/span>-origin moisture is expected to enter southwest Colorado beginning Monday, leading to an increase in the northward extent of thunderstorm coverage. Unfortunately, it is currently difficult to pinpoint which days will be most threatening, which will be hashed out in daily Flood Threat Bulletins. However, at least <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> storm activity is expected every day over the next week, and it is very likely that several days will likely have particularly high potential to produce heavy rainfall. Maximum 1-hour intensity locally exceeding 1.0 inch looks like a very good bet nearly every day with this event. While over this 8-day period covered by this Event, we foresee up to 2.5 inches of total precipitation over the San Juan Mountains with lower totals in surrounding areas.
