There was also a slight uptick in <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> behind the front over eastern Colorado. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> at Denver rose to 0.82 inches, but this morning&rsquo;s sounding also shows a strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;inversion&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;when temperature increases with height in the atmosphere; the presence of an inversion means the atmosphere is stable&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>inversion<\/span> (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span>) at 600mb. This should help to keep rainfall chances close to nil&nbsp;this afternoon and evening over the area.&nbsp;Best chance for&nbsp;a sprinkle or two will&nbsp;be over the Southeast Mountains near the southern border.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s a smokey start over the lower elevations of western Colorado. Near surface smoke is forecast to increase across the Northern\/Central Mountains this afternoon due to the location of High (northerly surface winds). As&nbsp;the High moved&nbsp;slightly&nbsp;to the west over the last 24-hours, a much drier air mass has moved into the region. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. Although weaker&nbsp;than&nbsp;yesterday, there&rsquo;s&nbsp;still&nbsp;a small pocket of weak moisture across the southern border. This may allow for an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span>, weak storm or two to develop over the southern San Juan Mountains near the border. High temperatures are expected to reach just over 100F over this region, which is also true of the Grand Valley. Slightly cooler highs in the low to mid-90Fs are forecast over the Northwest Slope and mountain valleys. So, it remains hot over these regions. A stray storm or two could pop over the southern San Juan Mountains near the border, and rain rates up to 0.25 inches per hour would be possible. Flooding is NOT forecast.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 2PM to 7PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northeast Plains, Palmer Ridge, Front Range, Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge, San Luis Valley, Urban Corridor &amp; Southeast Plains:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The mid-level <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;inversion&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;when temperature increases with height in the atmosphere; the presence of an inversion means the atmosphere is stable&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>inversion<\/span> should keep a lid on the chances for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;convection&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to vertical atmospheric motion driven by buoyancy, i.e., warm air is less dense than cool air, and therefore rises. One of the primary drivers of thunderstorm development, especially during monsoon season.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>convection<\/span> this afternoon. Some afternoon cloud cover is forecast over the mountains, which will help provide a little relief from the heat. These cloud bases may produce a sprinkle or two (south), but <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;virga&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wisps or streaks of precipitation falling out of a cloud that evaporate before reaching the surface. Virga can cause strong, but short-lived, localized winds (dry microburst).&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>virga<\/span> is the more likely scenario. A stray storm way wander into the&nbsp;Northeast Plains from Nebraska, but the likelihood of this happening is low. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.40 inches would be possible. Overall, it should be a beautiful day over eastern Colorado and the San Luis Valley.
