{"id":14812,"date":"2021-07-07T08:59:34","date_gmt":"2021-07-07T14:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=14812"},"modified":"2021-07-08T09:06:46","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T15:06:46","slug":"spm-07-07-2021-heavy-rain-and-flooding-in-southern-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=14812","title":{"rendered":"SPM 07-07-2021: Heavy Rain and Flooding in Southern Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Wednesday, July 7, 2021<br>\nIssue Time: 10:00 AM MDT<\/p>\n<h3>Summary:<\/h3>\n<p>Yesterday afternoon saw <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> on the Southeast Plains and Raton Ridge. Storms were associated with a weak and very slow moving cold frontal passage, which produced lines of thunderstorms all the way from Wisconsin to Southeast Colorado. Storms spawned funnel clouds reported by trained spotters and simultaneous landspout tornadoes, in addition to the heavy rain from the slow-moving storms. Lamar picked up 0.73 inches of rain in just under an hour, and nearby Granada saw 0.76 inches in a 2-hour period. Storms continued their southeastward movement through the afternoon as the front exited the state. <\/p>\n<p>Behind the front, thunderstorms began to develop in the late afternoon and evening in the Southeast, Central, and Front Range Mountains, with storms spilling into the Urban Corridor. Heavy rain for these late evening thunderstorms produced flooding in several locations across Southern Colorado. <\/p>\n<p>Heavy rain over Poncha Pass resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedenverchannel.com\/news\/local-news\/numerous-mudslides-disable-vehicles-on-u-s-285-in-poncha-pass\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series of slides<\/a> that closed Highway 285 shortly after 10:00 pm last night. The time series plot from Poncha Springs shows the area received 0.76 inches of precipitation yesterday in two short bursts, one in the early afternoon around 2:00 pm, and then a greater pulse with around 0.5 inches of rain around 9:00 pm. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/mm_time_chart_dyn-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/mm_time_chart_dyn-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/mm_time_chart_dyn-2.png 600w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/mm_time_chart_dyn-2-300x135.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Colorado State Patrol in Florence shared the following picture of one of the debris flows on Twitter. According to law enforcement, Texas Creek washed out resulting in over 3 inches of water on County Road 21. Floodwaters also caused damage to county roads 2 and 16 as well.
