Such is the case today. As shown in the water vapor image, below, yesterday&rsquo;s disturbance is now a gradually weakening mass of clouds currently over central Kansas. Much drier conditions are noted over Colorado, although interestingly this is not yet reflected by surface dewpoints. Morning dewpoints range from the in the 40s to as high as low 60s statewide. However, this moisture is shallow, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) values in the 0.6 to 0.8 range. Yesterday&rsquo;s incredibly &ldquo;juicy&rdquo; PWs have fallen by 30-40% into a more typical range for Colorado in mid-July.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/watervapor_20150722.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1359\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/watervapor_20150722.png\" alt=\"watervapor_20150722\" width=\"850\" height=\"478\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For today, we anticipate mostly sunny skies this morning to fill in with puffy cumulus clouds by early afternoon. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> high-elevation thunderstorms will once again dot the landscape, mostly north of I-70. By later in the afternoon, a few <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widely scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;10-25% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widely scattered<\/span> storms will be possible in the Northeast Plains as well. However, due to the strengthening ridge to the south, increasing subsidence will <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span> rainfall rates at around 0.4 inches over the higher terrain and around 0.7 inches in the far eastern Plains.
