A bit more moisture is also present as the remnants of Genevieve continue to move northward with <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> measured at 0.73 and 0.65 inches at Grand Junction and Denver, respectively. Looking at <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> (green numbers below), Tds are still quite low with the 50F contour shown by the dashed green line. That means that this moisture is mostly located in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. So, while this increase in moisture will cause more coverage of storms over the mountains this afternoon, the dry sub-layer will limit the amount of precipitation reaching the ground, especially over western Colorado. The evaporation that will occur in this lower layer will also produce cooling and further sinking of the air, which will likely help produce some gusty <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds with the storms that do form. Slower steering winds with 500mb High anchored over the southwest border may allow for some higher accumulations, when compared to yesterday, but flooding is not expected. Expect most storms to dissipate as they move eastward off the mountains with the best chance for survival over the ridges.<\/p>\n<p>Over the Northeast Plains another convergence line will set up associated with a surface low. Without an upper level jet or well-defined <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> moving into the area this afternoon, it isn&rsquo;t likely that storms will overcome the <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span>. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.35 inches will be possible. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> totals up to 0.6 inches will be possible over the Northeast Plains and eastern Palmer Ridge if storms are able to fire or make it this far east off the mountains. With most storms dissipating as they move off the mountains, expect only <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trace&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;a descriptor used when precipitation occurs, but the amount is too small (less than 0.01&amp;quot;) to be measured by a weather instrument such as a rain gauge&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trace<\/span> amounts of rainfall along the I-25 corridor, so flooding is not expected. High temperatures will be similar to yesterday as the heat wave continues.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 1PM to 9:30PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Central Mountains, Northern Mountains, San Juan Mountains, Grand Valley<\/strong><strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Southwest Slope,<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Northwest Slope, &amp; San Luis Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Although coverage of storms will increase, as well as relative humidity values, dry lightning and gusty <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds are a concern this afternoon. Best chance for wetting rainfall will be over the San Juan and eastern Central Mountains where <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> totals up to 0.4 inches (south) and 0.25 inches (north) will be possible. Elsewhere, expect only cloud cover and some brief sprinkles, so flooding is not expected.
