{"id":12828,"date":"2020-08-19T10:00:03","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T16:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=12828"},"modified":"2020-08-19T10:00:03","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T16:00:03","slug":"ftb-08-19-2020-increased-chances-for-storms-and-strong-winds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=12828","title":{"rendered":"FTB 08-19-2020: Increased Chances for Storms and Strong Winds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Wednesday, August 19th, 2020<br>\nIssue Time: 10:00AM MDT<\/p>\n<p><em>&mdash; Flooding is <strong>NOT<\/strong> expected today<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today the strong upper-level ridge will become less amplified and shift slightly south with the incoming <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> over the Pacific Northwest. This will allow some mid-level energy and moisture associated with a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> to move into northern Colorado early this afternoon (orange &ldquo;X&rdquo;). This morning&rsquo;s water vapor imagery also shows some mid-level moisture trapped under the ridge (blue on image below). These two sources of moisture, along with some extra lift, will help create high-based showers and storms over much of the eastern two-thirds of Colorado today.<\/p>\n<p>Surface moisture remains highest over the eastern plains (50Fs <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span>), and a lee surface low is expected to develop over southeast Colorado. This will provide weak easterly upslope flow on its north side and keep moisture a little higher over the eastern border with more southerly surface flow. So as storms develop and move into the plains, expect some upscale growth with the main threat being damaging <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds. Fast storm motion and only moderate moisture means there will be no flood threat issued, although storms could produce a quick 0.4 inches of rain in 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the west, large <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew point&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew point<\/span> depressions will create an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Inverted-V&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Refers to the shape of the lower levels of an atmospheric profile. The shape of the &amp;quot;Inverted V&rdquo; is the result of dry air below cloud level, which promotes strong winds and evaporation of precipitation before reaching the surface.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>inverted-V<\/span> profile, so there&rsquo;s a threat for strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds where storms develop. This includes all of the higher terrains, where increased surface winds and only minimal moisture has caused <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;NWS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;National Weather Service&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>NWS<\/span> to issue <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Red Flag&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;weather conditions are extremely conducive to burning and wildfires&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Red Flag<\/span> Warnings. A better chance for wetting rain exists over the Front Range and Eastern Mountains where moisture is a bit higher, but dry lightning is a concern today. A band of more organized storms should form by early afternoon along the northern areas of the Urban Corridor and Northeast Plains as a passing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> moves over Colorado and enhances lift. This band of storms over the plains will quickly move south\/southeast and could produce strong winds (up to 60 mph). Hail is less of a concern, but some severe hail cannot be ruled out. Max rain rates up to 0.8 in\/hr are possible with these stronger storm cores, but due to fast storm motions, flooding is not expected.<\/p>\n<p>Primetime: 2PM to 12AM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Grand Valley, Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Front Range, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Southeast Mountains, &amp; San Luis Valley:<br><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>High-based thunderstorms are likely for most mountain locations, with increased chances for measurable rainfall over the eastern mountains. Strong gusty winds up to 50 mph are possible with the stronger storms that develop, which is not good for the ongoing fires. Dry lightning is also a concern with the dry fuels across the state. Max 1-hour rain rates up to 0.1 in\/hr (west) and 0.4 in\/hr (east) will be possible. This is very impressive that temperatures are reaching this high with the thick smoke. A Heat Advisory is in effect for parts of the Colorado River valley, so keep yourself hydrated.
