{"id":1269,"date":"2015-07-15T10:20:55","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T16:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=1269"},"modified":"2015-07-16T10:18:37","modified_gmt":"2015-07-16T16:18:37","slug":"ftb-07-15-2015-fewer-thunderstorms-today-but-heavy-rain-is-still-a-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=1269","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-15-2015: Fewer Thunderstorms Today, But Heavy Rain is Still a Threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: 7\/15\/2015<br>\nIssue Time: 10:10 AM<\/p>\n<p><em>A MODERATE FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE SOUTHEAST PLAINS AND RATON RIDGE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A LOW FLOOD THREAT IS FORECAST FOR PORTIONS OF THE FRONT RANGE, URBAN CORRIDOR, NORTHEAST PLAINS, SOUTHEAST PLAINS, PALMER RIDGE, RATON RIDGE, SOUTHEAST MOUNTAINS, SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS, SOUTHWEST SLOPE, GRAND VALLEY, CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, NORTHERN MOUNTAINS, AND NORTHWEST SLOPE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The same overall pattern that has governed the Continental US weather over the past week or so continues today, as the upper-level ridge remains anchored over the south-central US and an upper-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> sits along the west coast. This will continue the stream of subtropical moisture across Colorado, albeit moisture will be slightly less than yesterday. Embedded in the flow are a couple of weak disturbances that will work across the state, but they will not have the same &ldquo;punch&rdquo; as yesterday. This is due to the fact that their time of passage will not coincide quite as well with peak daytime heating, thus a downtick in thunderstorm numbers today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IPW_07152015.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-1270 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IPW_07152015.png\" alt=\"IPW_07152015\" width=\"579\" height=\"248\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The best coverage of storms will occur across the High Country where orographic effects once again play a role in storm development, and across the far eastern plains where a surface <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> and greater surface moisture will be present. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> thunderstorms will be possible elsewhere. Much like yesterday, all strong storms, regardless of location, will hold the potential to produce brief moderate-to-heavy rain. With that said, storm motions will be quicker than yesterday, helping to limit the flood threat. Burn scars, urban areas, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;unstable&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the atmosphere is considered unstable if it is conducive to air attempting to rise; the opposite of stable; an unstable atmosphere is necessary for thunderstorms&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>unstable<\/span> soils, and locations that received heavy rainfall yesterday will be the primary concerns for flooding threats today.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today&rsquo;s Flood Threat Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information on today&rsquo;s flood threat, see the map below (hover over threat areas for more details). Maximum rain rates will be 0.8-1.4 inches\/30-45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Near the CO\/KS border, higher surface dewpoints and organization along a surface <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> will allow for greater max rainfall rates from strong-to-<span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> of 2.0-2.5 inches\/hour. The main threat from any <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> will be heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. Some small hail will likely be present, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 1 PM &ndash; 11 PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Front Range, Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, Grand Valley, Central Mountains, Southeast Mountains, San Luis Valley, Southwest Slope, and San Juan Mountains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms are expected today and tonight, although coverage will be slightly less than yesterday.
