It will be replaced by an incoming Low (Gulf of Alaska) and a minor upper <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> (Event #1), which will help rebuild a weaker ridge over Colorado for the rest of this week. The ridging pattern from Wednesday into Friday will continue the setup we saw for this last event, dry to the west and moist to the east as disturbances move through the WNW flow. The flow should become more westerly tomorrow evening, rather than NW, as a stronger <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> moves through the flow. This will help push storms further into the eastern plains where a lee cyclone will pull in some higher moisture. With another passing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;jet streak&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The region of a jet stream with the strongest winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>jet streak<\/span>, some <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> will be possible that could linger into the evening and overnight hours.<\/p>\n<p>By Saturday, the ridge starts to strengthens to our south, which will cause a decrease in moisture over the state as southwesterly and westerly flow increases. While some weak showers will likely still be able to form over the mountains each afternoon with residual moisture, there should be quite the downtick in rainfall for the weekend. Starting next week, the weak ridge axis looks to be pushed slightly east, which will allow for some higher <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values to return to the state for Event #2. Some days will likely have a higher flood risk than others, but to pinpoint disturbances moving through the flow this far out is very difficult. As seen in the last system, <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values continue to remain low over western Colorado and really drop off into this weekend. Thankfully, there are no days with strong upper flow mixing down to the surface, so <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;critical fire weather&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;weather conditions especially conducive to the formation of wildfires; typically strong winds, low relative humidity, and atmospheric instability&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>critical fire weather<\/span> is not anticipated. However, dry fuels are abundant and are really driving the Pine Gulch Fire. With the drought still in place over the majority of the state and a long, hot week ahead, elevated fire danger is forecast. Please use caution with any open flames or activities that could cause a spark, and pay attention to fire bans. The lone, heavy rainfall event last week did little to alleviate the ongoing drought.<\/p>\n<p>Over eastern Colorado, it looks like southeasterly and easterly flow at the surface really is helping keep the higher moisture pressed up against the foothills the next two days. Tomorrow, a lee cyclone is expected to develop over the eastern plains, which will continue to pull in high moisture on its east and north side, as well as enhance convergence, as seen by the <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> values greater than inch at Denver. &nbsp;Thus, an Elevated flood threat has been issued due to the increased moisture and upper dynamics combining over the eastern plains. An Elevated flood threat should suffice for Wednesday onward with a higher likelihood of storms moving into the adjacent plains\/higher moisture environment with the more westerly flow aloft. The timing of shortwaves during this period will cause on and off flood threats this week over the plains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12630\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PW_20200803.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PW_20200803.png 1100w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PW_20200803-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PW_20200803-768x257.png 768w, https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PW_20200803-1024x343.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event #1:<\/strong><strong> Tuesday &ndash;<\/strong><strong> Friday <\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>8\/4 <\/strong><strong>&ndash;<\/strong><strong> 8\/7<\/strong><strong>) <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Elevated Threat<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong>as a lee cyclone and continued southeasterly\/easterly flow at the surface holds higher moisture in place.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at some more <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> tomorrow over the eastern plains. Plenty of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span>, moisture, and mid-level energy will combine to help create some large hail and damaging <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A cool pool of air that results when a thunderstorm downdraft reaches the surface and spreads horizontally.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow<\/span> winds. Best chance for storms will be over the far eastern plains where the lee cyclone will pull in the highest <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span>. Even though storms will be moving relatively quickly with a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;jet streak&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The region of a jet stream with the strongest winds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>jet streak<\/span> aloft, they will still be able to produce rain rates just under 2 inches in an hour. Thus, a Moderate flood threat has been issued. For the rest of the week, disturbances will move through the flow and more WNW steering flow will help storms travel further in the plains where there is better moisture. Passing shortwaves and fronts\/boundaries will likely create pockets of heavy rainfall over the plains. This is especially true over western Colorado where dry conditions in the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;boundary layer&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style=&amp;quot;color: #ffffff;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;The lower portion of the atmosphere that is directly influenced by the earth&amp;#039;s surface. Primarily, the boundary layer is driven by solar heating during the day and radiational cooling at night.&amp;lt;\/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>boundary layer<\/span> will cause storms to produce more wind\/evaporation than rainfall after the moisture begins to return. There should be an uptick in activity over the southern\/eastern San Juan Mountains for this event and other mountainous areas south.
