{"id":12438,"date":"2020-07-23T09:45:11","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T15:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coloradofloodthreat.com\/?p=12438"},"modified":"2020-07-24T07:11:10","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T13:11:10","slug":"ftb-07-23-2020-leftover-monsoon-moisture-will-generate-more-mountain-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/?p=12438","title":{"rendered":"FTB 07-23-2020: Leftover Monsoon Moisture Will Generate More Mountain Storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Issue Date: Thursday, July 23rd, 2020<br>\nIssue Time: 09:45AM MDT<\/p>\n<p><em>&mdash; A <strong>LOW<\/strong> flood threat has been issued for the Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Southeast Mountains, Central Mountains, Grand Valley, Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, and Front Range, including the 416 burn area<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Colorado is situated between a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> along the US West Coast and a high pressure ridge to the east, as seen in the image below, which is allowing continued monsoonal moisture to be pumped northward into Colorado. The <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shortwave&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A disturbance in the mid or upper part of the atmosphere which induces upward motion ahead of it.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shortwave<\/span> that moved through yesterday has moved north of Colorado (see image below), but the moisture that it brought is lingering across the state. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> from the Grand Junction sounding this morning is sitting at 1.01 inch, which is above the 90th percentile for the date. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span> is slightly lower at 0.82 inch in Denver, but still above average. Additionally, <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dew points<\/span> are in the low to mid 50Fs in the valleys of western Colorado as well as along the plains east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span>. This moisture will allow plenty of instability to build, especially over the mountains. Upper-level southerly flow will generally weaken today, allowing storms to drift slowly northward and increasing the possibility of extended rainfall over areas. Due to the high chance of storms over the mountains, max rain rates up to 1 in\/hr, and the potential for rainfall over a prolonged period, a Low flood threat has been issued for portions of the Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Southeast Mountains, Central Mountains, Grand Valley, Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, and Front Range.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Colorado will see some <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> thunderstorms develop this afternoon, but flooding is not expected. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dew points&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The temperature to which a given air parcel must be cooled (at constant pressure and water vapor content) in order for saturation to occur.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Dew points<\/span> east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> are in the 50Fs, but surface moisture will decrease slightly during the day. Southerly winds will prevail over much of the plains of eastern Colorado, which will not be able to transport higher moisture from the east into western parts of the plains. Some <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> thunderstorms may be able to drop some heavy rain in the Southeast and Northeast Plains, but chances for storms are 50\/50 today. Max 1-hour rainfall up to 1 inch is possible over the Southwest Slope and San Juan Mountains, with 0.75 in\/hr expected for mountain locations farther north and east. A Low flood threat is expected today over the higher terrain, including the 416 burn scar.
