Light rain and higher-elevation snow showers were seen on radar and in surface observations mainly north of I-70 this morning. Just to our west, a large <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span> was noted on water vapor imagery (see below). This will support <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;widespread&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;greater than 60% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>widespread<\/span> shower and thunderstorm activity for most everyone except the southwest part of Colorado this afternoon and evening. Although the atmosphere&rsquo;s dynamics are supportive of precipitation today, the combination of limited heating and marginal moisture will fortunately put a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span> on rainfall rates for most areas. High temperatures will be anywhere from 5-15F below normal. <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>) values across the state this morning ranged from 0.50-0.70 in. east of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> to well below 0.50 inches over western areas.<\/p>\n<p>Over the higher terrain, rain and snow showers will pick up in intensity this afternoon, but will stay well below flood threat levels. Farther east, showers will turn into thunderstorms as more instability is encountered. The &ldquo;sweet spot&rdquo; today looks to be just southeast of Denver metro and over the Palmer Ridge. Latest trends in high-resolution model output are slowing the initiation of storm activity by several hours. This will allow instability to get higher than previously expected, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Higher values indicate a greater potential for stronger updrafts, thus an increase in the potential for thunderstorms and severe weather.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CAPE<\/span> in the 600-1,000 J\/kg range possible. Furthermore, low-level winds are expected to attain a more easterly component in response to the incoming <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trough&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure; the opposite of a ridge.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trough<\/span>, with a deep layer of upslope flow possible for a 2-3 hour period this afternoon. Despite relatively low <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;PW&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Precipitable Water) The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>PW<\/span>, dynamics will make up for this and support <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> heavy rainfall during the afternoon hours. A Low flood threat has been posted for parts of the region. Several rounds of heavy rainfall are possible before storms organize into a rapidly moving cluster, limiting rainfall rates later into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>In the Southeast Plains, there will be more sunshine and slightly higher moisture today, with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CAPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;(Stands for: Convective Available Potential Energy) CAPE is a measure of the amount of available energy in the atmosphere for convection. Brief heavy rainfall is possible with these storms, but flooding is not expected. Max 1-hour rainfall up to 1.1 inches possible over a localized area southeast of Denver metro. Max 3-hour rainfall up to 1.7 inches possible. A Low flood threat has been posted for parts of the region for a brief period of time this afternoon. Hail up to 1 inch and gusty winds are possible with the strongest storms. Primetime for the flood threat is 2-5 PM.<br>\nRainfall will persist into the evening hours, but will be below flood threat thresholds.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Southeast Plains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Partly cloudy this morning, then <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon. The strongest storms could produce hail up to 1.75 inches and gusty winds. Max 1-hour rainfall up to 0.9 inches for western areas and 1.4 inches for eastern areas. However, flooding is not expected due to relatively fast storm motion. Storms will transition into showers during the evening and early overnight hours.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Rain and snow showers picking up in intensity and coverage during the afternoon hours.
