Within this northwesterly flow is a couple of embedded disturbances that will make today and tonight fairly active for much of the state. Heavy rain is likely with stronger thunderstorms, as this morning&rsquo;s soundings measured <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> within the 90th percentile for the date. A quick glance at the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitable water&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The total atmospheric water vapor contained in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It is typically measured in inches, and anomalously (deviation from normal) high values of precipitable water generally correlate to heavy rainfall potential.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>precipitable water<\/span> chart for the normal 4 reporting stations shows this moisture clearly: Boulder, Grand Junction, and Pueblo are all at, or above, 1 inch at this time. Measurements from Shriever AFB show around 0.8 inches IPW, but this will likely rebound this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/07022015_IPW.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-1096 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/07022015_IPW.png\" alt=\"07022015_IPW\" width=\"467\" height=\"207\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There will be an ample amount of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;shear&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Local variation of the wind, either in the horizontal or vertical direction.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>shear<\/span> and instability available to thunderstorms today, and a few supercells are likely, particularly across the Urban Corridor and Palmer Ridge this afternoon. The main threats from these strong-to-severe storms will be large hail, strong winds, and locally heavy rainfall. For more information on rain rates, check the zone-specific forecast discussions below.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight, another round of showers and thunderstorms is possible for the Urban Corridor, Palmer Ridge, Northeast Plains, and Southeast Plains regions. Much like this morning&rsquo;s thunderstorms, they will be garden variety, but locally heavy rainfall will be possible, and the low threat of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> will continue into tomorrow morning, with the main concern being locations that received heavy rain during the afternoon\/evening hours.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Today&rsquo;s Flood Threat Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information on today&rsquo;s flood threat, see the map below (hover over threat areas for more details). A few will become severe, with the highest relative chances of reaching severe thresholds along the Urban Corridor and Palmer Ridge. The main threat from <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;severe thunderstorms&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Thunderstorms that produce a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 kts) and\/or hail at least 1&amp;quot; in diameter.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>severe thunderstorms<\/span> will be large hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. At any rate, most thunderstorms will be efficient rain-producers today, with maximum rain rates as high as 2-2.5 inches\/hour. Area burn scars and urban areas with expanses of impervious surfaces will be most susceptible to <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span> today.<\/p>\n<p>Timing: Noon &ndash; 11 PM will be the main threat period, with a secondary threat lasting through the night into tomorrow morning as mentioned above.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Northern Mountains, Northwest Slope, and Grand Valley:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Isolated<\/span> showers and thunderstorms possible over the higher terrain of the Northern Mountains and Grand Valley. The Northwest Slope will remain mostly dry, but one or two <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> weak showers\/thunderstorms over higher terrain cannot be ruled completely out. Maximum rain rates are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Northwest Slope: 0.25-0.4 inches\/hour<br>\nNorthern Mountains: 0.4-0.6 inches\/hour<br>\nGrand Valley: 0.4-0.8 inches\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Timing: 11 AM &ndash; 7 PM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Central Mountains, San Juan Mountains, San Luis Valley, Southeast Mountains, Southwest Slope:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;scattered&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;25-40% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Scattered<\/span> showers and thunderstorms expected, with the greatest relative coverage occurring over the Central Mountains, San Juan Mountains, and Southeast Mountains. With the amount of moisture present in the atmosphere, locally heavy rainfall will be a threat.
