Lower levels of moisture near the surface over the higher elevations kept surface accumulation on the lighter side for the western mountain ranges. Rainfall increased towards the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> where there was a better moisture pool from the previous day&rsquo;s rainfall and cold front on Tuesday. Chaffee County had the highest surface measurements for the mountains yesterday reporting between 0.12 and 0.42 inches over the area.&nbsp; Radar derived&nbsp;just above&nbsp;0.25 inches over the San Juan Mountains and Southwest Slope with 0.23 inches measured by a&nbsp;COOP station over Red Mountain Pass.<\/p>\n<p>Over the Front Range, cumulus began to sprout around 11am and storms moved into the adjacent plains around noon with the westerly flow aloft. The strongest storm formed near Colorado Springs and moved east over the Palmer Ridge with the upper level flow. Enhanced convergence over the elevated terrain and better moisture allowed storms to produce higher rain rates. Localized heavy rain was reported to the north of Monument in El Paso County with 0.9 inches of rain falling in 30 minutes. Mesonets throughout northern El Paso County and southern Douglas County reported&nbsp;as much as 0.98 inches with most totals between 0.20 and 0.45 inches of rain. Radar derived <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;isolated&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;less than 10% areal coverage&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>isolated<\/span> 1-hour rainfall rates up to 1.33 inches and 1.18 inches over western and eastern&nbsp;Elbert County, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Outflow boundaries<\/span> helped regenerate the storms as they moved east, but a stronger <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;cap&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The area where a parcel of air has negative buoyancy or sinks. The intensity of the cap is measured by its convective inhibition. If the cap is sufficiently large, it may prevent thunderstorms from forming at all.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>cap<\/span> over the far eastern border counties caused the storms to dissipate and produce some gusty winds before they could reach the Kansas border. Wind gusts up to 35 mph were reported near Seibert in western Cheyenne County, which produced a <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;dust storm&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;occurs when strong winds kick up dust, sand, and soil, creating a massive cloud at ground level that significantly hinders visibility and air quality&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>dust storm<\/span> that limited visibility to a quarter mile during the evening hours. The Limon airport had southerly winds in the 15 to 20 mph range yesterday afternoon and a strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundary&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. The map is updated daily during the operational season (May 1 &ndash; Sep 30) by 11AM.
