As storms moved into the moisture rich environment over the adjacent eastern plains, they dropped quite a bit of rainfall. They were moving fairly quickly, which kept totals from being too high. Therefore the higher totals you see over the Palmer Ridge are from a one or more storms passing over throughout the 24-hour period. Max 1-hour rainfall rates were still impressive though for how fast the storms were moving (1-1.5 inches). One storm over NE Huerfano County recorded 2.5 inches. There were several ALERT gages over Douglas County that produced over an inch per hour as well with the highest gage near Perry Park at 1.7 inches (from two storms). A <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flood&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Flash Flood<\/span> was reported east of I-25 near the Air Force Academy where 6 or more inches of rain were flowing over the roadway. A nearby spotter report 1.5 inches just south of the report. The WWTP station at the USAF recorded 2.68 inches for the 24-hour period! Near Manitou Springs, another USGS gage recorded 2.11 inches for the 24-hour period. Not surprisingly, this heavy rainfall caused Fountain Creek at Colorado Springs to spike into Action Stage (see below). There was even a brief touchdown of a tornado (source: spotter) near Meadow Lake Airport. Storms yesterday were producing some strong <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;outflow boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A surface boundary formed by the horizontal spreading of thunderstorm-cooled air. Outflow boundaries may intersect with each other or with other features (fronts, dry line, low-level jet) and initiate new convection. Brief strong winds are possible with outflow boundaries, and they can also persist for more than 24 hours.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>outflow boundaries<\/span>, so the dust on the ground could very well have been associated with this feature rather than a tornado touchdown. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;NWS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;National Weather Service&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>NWS<\/span> will do a survey in the next day or two to confirm the touchdown. Near Wetmore, 1.7 inches of rain was reported with street flooding and rocks on Highway 96. This will enhance the flood threat over the Junkins burn area this afternoon as soils are likely saturated, which would increase runoff and the potential for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;flash flooding&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;flash flooding can refer to usually dry areas becoming rapidly inundated with water, or rapid water level rises on streams, creeks, or rivers beyond flood stage; typically caused by heavy rainfall, but can also be caused by meltwater&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>flash flooding<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/fountain_creek_action_20190808.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive-coftb.dewberryanalytics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/fountain_creek_action_20190808.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"464\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alamosa even saw some rainfall with <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;trace&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;a descriptor used when precipitation occurs, but the amount is too small (less than 0.01&amp;quot;) to be measured by a weather instrument such as a rain gauge&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>trace<\/span> amounts recorded in the interior of the valley. Along the edges near Del Norte, close to a half inch was recorded by two <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;CoCoRaHS&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;mmunity &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Co&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;llaborative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Ra&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;in, &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;ail, and &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;now Network, a volunteer network of precipitation observers across the country&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>CoCoRaHS<\/span> stations. Best rainfall over the higher terrains of western Colorado was near Powderhorn and Gunnison and then north near the Flat Tops. Radar indicates up to 0.5 inches fell near the higher elevations of Palisade. Meeker Airport recorded 0.26 inches for the day and Gypsum 0.34 inches. Flooding was not reported west of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Continental Divide&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph {&amp;quot;textColor&amp;quot;:&amp;quot;white&amp;quot;} --&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;p class=&amp;quot;has-white-color has-text-color&amp;quot;&amp;gt;the dividing line that separates the watersheds of the western and eastern United States; rivers west of the divide empty into the Pacific Ocean, while rivers east of the divide empty into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico&amp;lt;\/p&amp;gt;\n&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Continental Divide<\/span> due to faster steering winds and drier air mixing in from the southwest.<\/p>\n<p>To see estimated precipitation totals over your neighborhood, scroll down the State Precipitation Map below.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id6a1ee40197707\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Click Here For Map Overview\">Click Here For Map Overview<\/h4><div id=\"target-id6a1ee40197707\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\nThe map below shows radar-estimated, rainfall gage-adjusted Quantitative Precipitation Estimates (<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;QPE&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;Q&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;uantitative &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;P&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;recipitation &amp;lt;strong&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;\/strong&amp;gt;stimate; an estimate of the amount of precipitation that has fallen at a particular location or across a region based on several different data sources, such as radar or satellite; QPE is often calculated using remotely-sensed data sources&lt;\/div&gt;\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>QPE<\/span>) across Colorado. The map is updated daily during the operational season (May 1 &ndash; Sep 30) by 11AM. The 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour total precipitation contain bias corrections that are not disaggregated into the hourly estimates, so there will likely be some differences. Also shown optionally are vulnerable fire burn areas (post 2012), which are updated throughout the season to include new, vulnerable burn areas.
